Villagers have petitioned authorities to ensure that the men accused of the gang-rape of a 14-year-old schoolgirl at a small village in Phang Nga province receive justice.

They say that some suspects had faced arrest warrants even before they were interrogated by police.

“Such an action violates the rights and freedom of the suspects,” Sanpetch Thipmontien, a volunteer villager representative, said on Monday.

He gave an interview as he led more than 40 local people to Deputy Phang Nga Governor Ekarat Leesen to lodge a petition.

The people, most of whom are women, said the arrests meant some families would lose their breadwinners.

The sexual crimes allegedly took place over several months last year. The victim, now 15, told police that she was sexually assaulted by at least 40 men.

After the alleged crimes attracted massive media attention, several residents complained that the allegation damaged the village’s reputation and insisted that police should also listen to the accused.

A total of 11 suspects have already been identified.

Another suspect, identified as Nawik Jaruek, turned himself in at Kok Kloi Police Station on Monday to deny the allegation.

He is one of three suspects that the court approved arrest warrants for last Friday.

Two other suspects have already been forwarded to court.

Phang Nga Police Station’s chief Pol Maj-General Boontawee Toraksa said investigators were still working to apprehend all the individuals involved in the case.

A source maintained yesterday that at least three more suspects in the scandal were still living normal lives because of their financial and social status.

"Hubby dear, the news says that poor girl down the road was raped by half the population of this village, that means by nearly all the men. Were you one of them?"

"No, dear,  of course not. How could you think such a thing? No Thai man would ever do that!"

"Well that's terrible! All the neighbourhood wives and I are going on a protest march to stick up for you!"

"Well, good, but remember that Somchai, Nong, and some of their pals might have been involved, and none of this is good for our village reputation."

"Well I think that's even worse! How could that slut make such an allegation. We better send her to a mental institution, where she can have her attitude changed. She needs to realise that this is a country where we respect our chidren, human rights, and the sanctity of childhood. There is no rape, child abuse or prostitution here - not in Thailand, not on this island, and especially not in this village!"

"the arrests meant some families would lose their breadwinners" .... ... likely for many years to come !
And this is as it should happen with rapists and raping paedofiles.
These sorry excuses of humans should have thought about that before having a go at the
virginity of the 14 year old and raping her over and over again.

I hope they get the justice to go to jail, and then lose their man hood in jail.

Maybe they can experience a rape to them selves to see how rape really feels.

I watched a TV show last night; Jim Jefferies. Part of the performance was on Bill Crosby and rape. Bill is said to have raped over 50 women during his prime time. It was a satirical performance of the seriousness of Rape.

A 14 year old girl has been raped. End of discussion?

How would you feel if this was your daughter? Would you be concerned with the village reputation or the status of some more affluent men; or would you take 10,000 baht in compensation?

Its a despicable act that needs to be treated as such and those involved be brought to justice.

Interesting to note that like me, most are sure it happened and none of us want an innocent to be jailed but this looks as if it is all true and probably some will not be punished let the law take it's course and the punishment of the village for allowing these monsters to believe they could do this without the consequences of the vile act of raping a minor.

This will get uglier and I hope they all suffer severe punishment.

Then it's time to bring in serious and not-connected investigators and prosecutors from Bangkok.
