webfact
Former video game addict, 11, now scavenging for his sick dad Picture: Thai Rath A Korat boy who used to be just like his friends and play video games all day has now become the man of the house after his father fell sick. Eleven year old Chaichana Phuangsam's story was featured online after it emerged he uses all his spare time after school to scavenge for rubbish from the neighborhood bins in Pak Chong to sell to recyclers. Chaichana - or Tao - is a P4 student at Ban Nong Sarai school. He said he used to be completely addicted to video games but since his dad fell down he has had to be more responsible and become a breadwinner in the family. Now he said he cycles off after school to find stuff to sell. He gives what he makes to his father who uses it for household expenses. But it is very little - Tao makes just 30 baht a day or around 200 baht a week and now an appeal has been launched after locals said that this was a very deserving case. Reporters from Thai Rath went to the village to find out for themselves and met with the local Pak Chong authority, teachers and child development agencies who are on the case. Tao's teachers said he was an average student in class but was diligent and thoroughly deserving of help due to his great attitude - especially after shunning the video parlor life for one more industrious in aid of his family. A fund has been set up in the name of Chaichana Phuangsam at the Krung Thai branch in Pak Chong A/C# 303-092371-1. The account is overseen by the school director and another in the education department as well as the father. Two signatures out of the three are needed to make any withdrawals to help ensure the money goes where it should.
