PHUKET:-- The Phuket’s Lifeguard Service has today confirmed that they are to strike from Oct 1 following last weeks revelation that the Phuket Provincial Administration Organisation (PPAO) has cut the service’s budget for the second consecutive year.

Today’s (Sept 25) announcement came at a press conference held by the Phuket lifeguard Service at the Phuket Royal City Hotel in Phuket Town this afternoon (Sept 25).

Last Friday (Sept 23) The Phuket News revealed that Phuket’s lifeguards were threatening to go on strike from Oct 1 after the budget for their services was quietly cut yet again at an PPAO council meeting last month.

Does anyone know how many lifeguards there are?

19.8 million seems a fair enough budget to me.

All these 'lifeguards' are part timers and spend much of the day plying their own  'business'  life renting surboards, jet ski hire, and parasailing. Sure there have been some positive report about saving lives but these guys are in busines for themselves and the guard pay is just a bonus ontop.

It would be interesting to know exactly how much they get paid.

Uniforms and flags can't cost much, what else does the budget cover?

well, since most workers are at the bottom of every organization, it makes sense to cut there because the multiplier effect is the largest given the large number of people involved.

These guys don't get paid more than around 11-12K/month and it's shameful that the local gov't can make some much gov't cash disappear into projects, yet can't fund the one thing that brings tourists to the island, it's beaches.  Why aren't there public facilities every 500 metres and why doesn't the gov't pay more for life guarding services including decent equipment?  Rhetorical question.

This is not uncommon. Myrtle Beach South Carolina does not pay the lifeguards on the beach at all. Their entire "salary" comes from commissions on renting beach chairs and umbrellas.
