Any recent rejection stories?

Recommended Posts

At Sadao, you just need to show 20K Baht with a Tourist-Visa or 10K Visa Exempt, a requirement which could be bypassed with a bribe, in the past.  Not sure if "out one night" for Visa-Exempts is being required, or if that has mellowed since the 2x land-border visa-exempt per calendar-year rule came into effect.

In response to having their bribe-money taken away, IOs were reported to have begun requesting persons with a ME-Non-O Visas, on border-bounces, to also show the cash.  Last reports were than Pedang Besar had also started asking to "see the money" to enter, though were one of the friendlier places to enter, in the past.

In land-border cases, if one doesn't have the money when asked, they just walk back to the Malaysian checkpoint, cancel their exit-visa, go to an ATM, get the cash, and go back through again.  No detention, etc.

At airports, there was no access to ATMs to those rejected (to spite pleas), and they were detained and sent back.  Some with the cash to show were also detained and sent back under the premise they "might" be coming to work illegally (hard to prove what one will-not do in the future).

I'm a bit reluctant carrying around a lot of cash these days, as just recently my wallet with a larger sum was stolen. 20,000 baht is at least 20 large banknotes. Would IOs, at the border posts in the south, also accept other currencies, e.g. a Euro banknote worth more than 20,000 baht, or only Thai baht?

The equivalent of 20k baht or more in a exchangeable currency will be accepted.
