Four prisoners who escaped from custody as they were due to appear at a Koh Samui court have all been apprehended.

The four men vaulted over a wall and fled into a coconut plantation after their shackles had been removed.

A force of 200 police conducted the manhunt.

After a discarded prison garment was found two of the suspects - Nareubet and Porn-anan - were caught hiding at the Bang Sao Thong waterfall.

Later last night the other two - Phaitoon and Thanawat - were found in a workers' camp in Maret. They had stolen clothes but gave no resistance as they were re-arrested.

Sanook said that three of the suspects were facing charges of possession of a Class 1 drug while Nareubet is charged with stealing during the hours of darkness.

"Stealing during the hours of darkness"?

Is stealing during the hours of darkness a crime? What is the sentence? Fine or jail?

Is stealing during the daylight okay?

Serious question: can anyone explain?

Cheers

Stealing in the night time carries double the sentence than that of daytime crime .its to deter nighttime crimes as its more scary for the victim ..

are there really that many police on the island?

Should have hidden near one of the piles of rubbish on the roadside, these areas seem to be invisible to anyone acting in an official capacity.

We received the photos from those four men, on our telephone, from my DIL,  well-connected, should I say?

My wife insisted and forwarded the pictures on my own telephone too, "so I could take care" in case them/one of them cross my way

Then yesterday late at night my wife "obliged me" to put two big chains on our motorbikes, chains I bought for when we live the place a few days I can secure the motorbikes better. She looks if the car's alarm was functioning properly and padlocked the brake's pedal!

I told her gently it was ridiculous a bit too much, the Isle being not so tiny how many chances for those men to come to our house rather isolated.

We must take care "because" we are rather isolated, those are dangerous men because they do not want to return to prison at all cost...

...5 minutes ago I told my wife, you will sleep better tonight the police arrested the four men, Yes I know! How do you know? My daughter called me to tell me there is no danger anymore!

Who says the life is too dull in Samui?

It probably corresponds to laws dating back to the 19th century.

When social life more commonly stopped at night and the robberies during the night were considered more premeditated.

Some European countries have abandoned this aggravating circumstance not so long ago, due to the fact the economic and social life does not stop with the night anymore, but before they had this very same law, so not specific to Thailand at all:smile:

No, they added the extra '0' to sound scary.  Worked for me when I first read it then I realized...

Not 200 "police" probably, but 200 people for sure, maybe more, they asked every police in uniform and plain cloth in Samui to join, but also the personnel of a hospital and many civilians volunteered for "the chase"

I thought it was a joke too, but it makes sense if you go back 100 years or more when there was no social life, no clubs, etc etc and when people lived in isolated places by candlelight.

Much more scary at night, and the cops not so...er...efficient.

Just my 6p worth.

Now that was funny. Better than the old saying that the best place to hide is right under the copper's nose
