The Royal Crematorium for HM the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej stands tall in Sanam Luang, next to the glittering Grand Palace yesterday. Ceremonies are scheduled to take place from October 25 to 29.

ABOUT 250,000 Thai citizens are expected to attend the Royal Cremation of His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, at Sanam Luang in Bangkok on October 26, Deputy Prime Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan said yesterday.

If Sanam Luang becomes overcrowded, the authorities will seek the cooperation of mourners to place funeral flowers at replicas of the Royal Crematorium at various sites around Bangkok instead, Prawit said.

He was speaking after a meeting of the committee tasked with providing security and traffic during the Royal Cremation.

Spanning five days from October 25-29, the cremation will be a spectacular event infused with Buddhist ceremonies, cultural performances and mysterious palace rituals.

Prawit said about 70,000 state officials and employees would provide security at Sanam Luang and some registered volunteers would also be there to help.

A joint coordination centre with the Defence Ministry would be set up tomorrow to arrange security measures, while signs would be erected to inform the public which roads to use and which to avoid as they would be used by the royal funeral processions.

Meanwhile, two locations where mourners are being screened before entering the Grand Palace to pay respects before the Royal Urn are to remain open around the clock until October 5.

His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn has extended the lying-in-state period to October 5, giving mourners from across the country more time to pay homage.

I wonder if they got the numbers wrong again? 70'000 officials for security etc. covering 250'000 expected visiting mourners; i.e. ration 1:3.5?

I would assume that there will be many more than 250'000 to bid a final farewell to HM.

The wording of this article is totally confusing to me.

They might mean that 250'000 is the number of people that can packed around the Sanam Luang area.

But surely not the number of Thai citizens (trying) to get to Bangkok for the cremation which I estimate in the millions.

If Sanam Luang becomes overcrowded,

"If" !!!

I hope they have good plans how to manage the influx to Bangkok.

Hope never dies.

I would block all incoming individual traffic at the outer ring road and organize mass transport from there. OK, just fantasizing.
