These idiots just don't get it. Isn't the first rule of Buddhism to relinquish all material possessions?????

 

It would be one thing if this was just a follower of Buddhism but this is a monk.

 

Instead of trying to set a positive example, this guy has just shown a true example of the real hypocrisy of ALL religion.

A Buddhist monk in Surin has won 18 million baht in the National Lottery draw held yesterday.

 

Phra Somthip Ananyo - or just plain Somthip Jaemsai - went to Jorm Phra police yesterday evening to register his claim.

 

He showed his three tickets, that were bought in the local market, to reporters.

 

He asked police not to reveal his temple's exact location and his address saying that would be dangerous.

 

He arrived at the police station with his father, relatives and other monks.

 

He said he would spend a proportion of his windfall on "making merit".

 

He plans to go to Bangkok to claim his fortune in the next few days.

As a good Monk, he can donate the money to temple school's improvement.

 

Would give a balance of evil of monk winning a lottery.

not even supposed to have money. Wonder what will come of this.

Happy girlfriends. ..I thought you are not allowed to drink or gamble in Buddhism.

Or are there any exemptions??

I have seen a Monk smoking cigarettes too and I thought it's odd. Then thai people who passed by also looked at him like <deleted>.. 

As a monk he not supposed to play lottery. Disrobe him immediatly. A shame for the monkhood

All monks who win the lottery should be forced to donate their winnings to a good cause. If you're gambling, you're not a Buddhist monk.

There is Buddhism and Thai Buddhism, with very little similarity between the two. Buddhism in Thailand is run as a business, with charges made for new home chanting, funeral chanting etc etc etc.

Wow... so much hostility towards monks and Buddhism... a little reality check here... one is not magically transformed into an enlightened saint upon ordaining as a monk. You come in with all your baggage. Through meditation and a disciplined life style you gradually let it go and mature. You begin with a set of rules to follow. Just that is quite a task for young monks. Mistakes, setbacks, relapses are normal for the course.  Of course, with a vow of poverty and winning the lottery presents quite the moral dilemma...

Thing is thai's aren't exactly sharpest on attention to detail. So it applies to Buddhism too.

 

Just mentioned to my wife this story and she just looked puzzled- yet my reaction with limited knowledge was automatically that's wrong.

 

So as in so many cases a thai sees it as a 'grey' area.

To most of us it's very easy to see as 'black and white'.

 

we do live in modern times and it is stupid to play by the rules that monks don't handle money. It's the kind of farcical notion that would make the whole practice archaic.

seems to have told everyone,even all those on TVF know,

I cannot understand why anyone will want to give there

name out when they win the lottery,especially those huge

amounts in the West,and for the people who say, i am not giving up work !

Funny, but yesterday my wife was at a Temple in CM area to get an Emerald Buddha blessed and awake for the home, and the monk there had just won 180,000 baht on the lottery. What's with the 18!

How many millions of baht did he spend on buying lottery tickets while being a monk? 

 

Most gamblers spend way more than they ever win!  

Surah Maidah verses 90-91:
O you who believe! intoxicants and games of chance and (sacrificing to) stones set up and (dividing by) arrows are only an uncleanness, the Shaitan's work; shun it therefore that you may be successful.

At least Islam has the definition of gambling correct! (Ps. Am not a Muslim)

By the time he has paid off his bar tab and gambling debts, and has bought a few gifts for his giks, there won't be much left for the wild parties, drugs and prostitutes.
