I am in agreement with you, and by admitting defeat, gun-confiscation advocates can get on with their lives. Maybe they can shift their safety advocacy to something useful like more mental health funding and treatment.

The two advocacy’s are not mutually exclusive.

Gun regulation advocacy may be doomed to failure at the national level, but it works at the local level—in counties, cities and states.

Thankfully, better people than I and Hodges have not given in to despair and continue to advocate for what the majority of Americans want: stricter gun regulations, a federal gun registry, reinstating funding for the CDC to study the effects of guns, and the banning of assault rifles—none of which would contravene the Second Amendment.

Others can contribute in their own ways, such as by donations to these advocacy groups, etc.

Of course they're not mutually exclusive but I though you said that one was futile? I was just suggesting a more productive outlet for their efforts. However, I can see the Democrats and other liberal groups' reluctance  to stop beating the drum for gun confiscation as it's surely good for fund raising.

That is an overly cynical view.

Anyway, I didn’t say it was futile, I said it *may* be futile and went on to suggest that view is based on my personal diepair over the situation. There are plenty of good people more optimistically working to promote common sense regulations, the effects of which would be to save lives.

Name some prominent Democrats in office calling for gun confiscation.

There is nothing sacred about the US Constitution or the various amendments. All it takes is the political will to change it.

Yes, there are still many guns in private hands in Australia. However, very few of these are semi-automatic weapons, because it is illegal to own one. Get caught with one, and it's jail time.

Americans can't seem to understand the reason we have not had a mass shooting since 1996 is not because we have banned guns. We haven't. We have banned the weapons whose sole purpose is to kill people as quickly and efficiently as possible. Unless you are an expert, carrying out a mass shooting with a bolt-action weapon is fairly difficult.

Perhaps you are right though. America does seem to have a lot of mental health problems. Isn't that why the phrase " Only in America" came into being?

I am really glad that Oz has not had a mass shooting event, seriously, with or without their 'god changing law of 1990.....whatever'.  I also am glad that Oz just banned guns that kill other people, "...We have banned the weapons whose sole purpose is to kill people as quickly and efficiently as possible..." if American's could just see the light that only certain weapons kill people so quickly and efficiently perhaps murders in American via guns would drop just like Oz.  I am serious and grateful that Oz has not had a mass shooting event, nor wish it on any state.

Most of them are calling for a ban on "assault weapons"...there are millions of "assault weapons" in circulation. How do you think they can implement such a ban without confiscating those already in circulation.

Ok...then good luck to them...they'll need it.

Similar to the way they banned automatic weapons, by banning the sale of new ones.  Those that were out there at the time are still out there.  Similarly existing, legal assault weapons could be grandfathered in.

However the realistic politicians just want to have some sanity on ownership.  As I've posted earlier, rules on guns and gun owners similar to those on automobiles and drivers would help a lot.  However the pro-gun enthusiast keep claiming any attempt at intelligent regulation will lead to bans and confiscations, even though that didn't happen with cars, or automatic weapons.

Edit:  It's worth noting that you've gone from " the Democrats and other liberal groups' reluctance  to stop beating the drum for gun confiscation" to the much more limited "ban on assault" weapons.  You went from an all encompassing, hysterical "they want to confiscate our guns" to the much more specific and reasonable call for a ban on assault rifles.  Prone to hyperbole, are you?

A secular version of “thoughts and prayers?”

Thanks!

The whole thing is sickening. Every <word> who is a gun fetishist just go's back to the 2nd like doctrine. We have to because we have to. This is why I say they may as well be Creationists.

I'm going to use a word 'ZyZ'. I am sick of the excuses and the mealy mouth apologies from the gun fetishists when people are being shot every day. Every argument makes no ZyZing sense even on a casual level to the point where you may as well argue that the world is flat. ZyZing <another word> think that reason and logic is suspended in this regard. Dullards say that the jury is still out! You want to see abject stupidity then you will find it in the gun argument. Go back 30 pages and every single argument is BS to the point it is derisory. There is no argument, no basis to argue from. Stupid ignorant ZyZ <word in plural>

Calm the Zyz down, man. I say, “don’t get mad, get active”

Thoughts and prayers and anger will achieve nothing. Activism will.

ZyZ actually.

Can I use the word whore on here? These people are ZyZing whores run, maintained, and regulated by the gun lobby. I don't care if they want to sit there with their thumb up their anus jacking off to a picture of Charlton Heston so long as is does not have any effect on myself or others.

They should be confiscated.
