Minimum wage to be $170

Featured Replies

Almost one million people who work in the garment, textile and footwear industries will receive a pay rise at the start of next year after representatives of the government, employers and unions agreed yesterday to lift the minimum wage to $170 per month. After months of meetings and bargaining, Labour Minister Ith Samheng announced the increased minimum salary late yesterday afternoon.

In a final vote yesterday, representatives of the three bodies decided to accept $165, but Prime Minister Hun Sen then added another $5, so the total net salary will be $170 per month. Starting in January next year, the new salaries will be paid to almost one million workers in about 1,000 factories across Cambodia who produce garments, textiles and footwear, which are the kingdom’s biggest exports.

Workers in these industries have current net salaries of $153 per month, but also receive other bonuses such as overtime, food and transportation allowances, as well as free medical check-ups. Yesterday’s decision confirmed that contracted employees will receive $165, and when they change to being fulltime staff, they will receive the full $170, excluding other benefits.

Compared to Thailand, many things are so much cheaper.  Beer at 50 cents/glass (16.5Baht) for example.

Really????

Tell me where. I can find a plate of grapao gai in Thailand for 25 baht. You can feed yourself for 20 baht at many of the southern curry stalls. Can't find any kind of a dish of anything in Cambodia for under 4000 riel.

Everything in Cambodia is more expensive except for alcohol, cigarettes and rent. And there is certainly more poverty.
