Does anyone know the extent of the alcohol sales ban for the upcoming royal cremation?

Just asking because trying to plan a bike trip with a buddy and would hate to end up in Phuket with the booze taps turned off!

Thanks in advance.

The 26th is an absolutely certain (ok 99.997%) booze-ban, 25th and 27th highly likely.

To be honest I doubt anyone really knows (even the authorities) exactly what will be required on the ground and local "suggestions" will prevail.

Remember, when His Majesty passed there was supposed to be a whole year of nothing, which rapidly mutated into 2 days of nothing and a few months of "muted" before normality returned.

I suspect something similar (possibly less).

Before I quit drinking (alcoholism) I can guarentee you I would have found alcohol in the middle of the Sahara desert when I was in need of a drink (or just wanted one).

Nothing official as yet that has been widely publicised.

Rumours of Thailand closing for business have been denied only a call for respect.

That is what I have seen.

A notice has been published (there's another thread about it) but no "alcohol ban".  Just subdued lighting and music and no outdoor parties.  Exactly as happened in the days following the King's death last year.

I think everyone should volunteer to show some respect/restraint on this solemn occasion. After all they are our hosts and the period of mourning should not be undermined. It is not too much to ask.

If I was to make an educated guess based upon prior experience- I would guess closure of all bars on the 25th and 26th-  everything subdued prior to that and after that to the end of October. No alcohol  25 and 26 wih the 26th being an official holiday- thus all Government offices closed.

That's not what the official notice says. There are no alcohol restrictions or bans and just a request for no loud music/bright lights or outdoor parties.

That is what it says for the month prior to the cremation, but nothing in the statement says anything about the days that the cremation takes place.

if I recall correctly, when the kings mother was cremated there was a 3 day bar closure, and I wouldn't expect anything less for this event.

You may be right. If anything I expect places will close to let their staff mourn at home, rather than an alcohol ban.

Not rocket science - buy enough before any possible sales ban. :shock1:

Please share with us the prior experience of a reigning monarch's funeral rights in Thailand.

Typically no official word and expect different districts enforcing their own laws.

I was here when King's mother died and I agree with others that you can expect a maximum of:

13th no booze all day.

Night of 25th bars closed and no sale in supermarkets right through to open again on 30th at 11am.

Stock up or go over the border.

Why not have a read through the various threads on this topic. "Official word" has been issued and is clear. Entertainment is to be toned down (no outdoor parties, subdued lighting and music) but no alcohol ban or closures. Obviously individual businesses will make their own decisions, as Tesco Lotus has done by closing from 2pm on the 26th, but common sense seems to be prevailing on this occasion.

Makes sense to me to buy, well in advance, a few liters or cases of one's favorite booze and watch the colourful evening events on big screen hi-def TV.

Or go to your local "ma n pa" store that sells grog all hours that they are open.

As stated our shop and every other shop in village and surrounding villages will be closed from the end of play on 25th through until the 28th village markets are also suspended for those dates.

On the 26th the villages will close the main road through all three villages in both directions from the 26th 1000hrs untill 2200hrs on the 26th.

The three village temples will have large screen tv stages up to relay the funeral.

I would suggest to just go with the flow. 3 or 4 days doing nothing wont hurt.

If I wanted days of sitting on my backside doing nothing I would have stayed in my home country. The raison d'etre of moving here was to give my backside a break and other body parts a chance to shine  (in particular one which I cannot mention in a family forum).

If drinking for you is an anti-social, dependency induced activity, then sure. If as for most people it's a social lubricant, then that's banned sorry. :(

That will be the first time!

Logically, with many years experience, I still say the same.

What I suggested is the Maximum, and if you want a drink be prepared.

I read all the "official" announcements, just wait and see what happens...

A couple of days of mourning for a King and all you care about is dipping your wick. So sad. You can always use the dead hand method. Or im sure there will be some freelancers roaming round.

I hope your post was meant as a joke, if not you got serious problems.

On the 13th, what does actualy mean? Will the closure of entertainment venues be closed from Thursday night until Friday morning but reopen on Friday late evening meaning Saturday at 12am in the morning?
