transfering money to thailand

Featured Replies

I have banked with Nationwide for many years but recently I have had problems with their SWIFT transfer service

Despite filling the requested info, my transfers have failed.

I noticed that my Thai Bangkok Bank account Number was NOT asked for only my name of my account.

Is this acceptable? at the moment I have had 3 transfer  fails.

Hard to believe that this could work.

Completely ambiguous.

"Joe Smith"? Which Joe Smith.

I always had to specify the account number.

Your account number directs the deposit to the right bank branch and then onward to you.

Their website clearly states an account number is required if there is no IBAN.  Bangkok Bank is not in Europe and does not have such a number.  With only your name Bangkok Bank would require your address and telephone number be included in payment instructions.

What is an IBAN?
IBAN stands for ‘International Bank Account Number’, a code offered to an individual or company in European countries only. Bangkok Bank doesn’t have IBAN and the remitter does not have to specify an IBAN in the payment instruction to Bangkok Bank. Remitters must specify Bangkok Bank’s SWIFT code: BKKBTHBK when sending funds to Thailand.

The SWIFT form will ask you for the following details:

  • Receiving Bank Identifier Code (BIC)
  • Name of the receiving bank
  • Address of the receiving bank
  • The name of the person receiving the funds (beneficiary)
  • Beneficiary's IBAN or account number
  • Amount to be sent
  • Currency to be sent

Apart from the SWIFT code, the 3 key elements are account number, name and reason for transfer.

After 4 attmpts to transfer to my Thai Bank account and as many messages to Nationwide I can say with assurance that the Nationwide swift transfer web page is FLAWED....why do I say this?....because it does not ask for the account number to whom the money is being sent.

I have pointed this flaw to Nationwide and todate no reaction

Not having an account can not check but does it ask for IBAN?  Suspect that is where you would enter the account number according to their own web site instructions for their SWIFT form that I posted above..

I can't believe it doesn't request an account number. Can you screenprint it? Take out any sensitive parts

Loburi3 said it right. The Nationwide Swift form only mentions IBAN...no reference to Bank account number.

I have complained to Nationwide  about this and first timers trying to transfer would not know.

I wrote to the Chief Exc about this...am waiting for a reply

Swift code and Bic code are the same. Enter swift into Bic along with all other pedigree data minus the account number.
