BeeDeeGee Posted October 19, 2017 Posted October 19, 2017 Hello everyone! Me, my husband, and 18 m/o are moving to Chiang Mai at the beginning of the year. Up until recently we’ve had no major setbacks with moving, however my son was just diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). We are currently still in the USA and finding info online (about Autism, therapies, general info, etc.) has been a real challenge, which has put a spin on our plans. I’ve found several good articles but nothing in depth like I want. I’ve also read about two centers in Chiang Mai known to help people with ASD. Has anyone had experience with these centers? Has anyone moved to Thailand with a child with special needs? If so, do you have any helpful advice? Thanks! -Birdy Sent from my iPhone using Thailand Forum - Thaivisa mobile app
blackcab Posted October 25, 2017 Posted October 25, 2017 As with any kind of medical issue, check the costs very carefully. Private treatment in Thailand can be reasonably priced but it can also be costly.
claffey Posted November 1, 2017 Posted November 1, 2017 There are only a few specialist centres in Bangkok. In Thailand special needs are not really a consideration. This is because families would rather 'save face' than have their child diagnosed and helped. I work in an International school and there is a huge reluctance on the part of Thai parents to have their children assessed, even if it is quite clear than help is required. Therefore, due to a lack of demand there are not many specialist centres to go to. There is one called 'The Village' in Bangkok which helps to assess and help children with special needs. If I were you I would reconsider moving here at all. Your child will receive better provision in your home country, unless you are wealthy that is...
Frogmountain Posted November 1, 2017 Posted November 1, 2017 Check here for resources. Be aware that early intervention is key and it will be very hard to get good services in Chiang Mai. It's pretty challenging in Bangkok, too. http://www.bangkokcommunityresources.org/mental-health-treatment-options/mental-health-agencies
