I came to the Kingdom on a 30 day visa free entry, and instead of staying overnight in Bangkok like I planned (and wrote on the TM6) I headed north and found a place to stay in Chiang Mai. The place caters more to locals so they may not have filed a TM30.

Now it's time for a 30 day extension.

If I get the place to file a TM30 now (assuming they didn't) will that be alright with immigration, or am I better off heading down to Bangkok, checking into a hostel for a night, and doing the extension there? (of course, round trip + overnight is more than the 1600 THB that I've heard they fine you for missing TM30)

I moved this thread to the Thai Visas subforum (left a link in Chiang Mai forum).

Even if there might be a local component (how does CM treat this specifically) such question gets more attention in Thai visas...

Those immigration offices that worry about TM30 from tourists (many do not) expect tourists to move around. Even a TM30 done the same day you apply for an extension (with some proof of where you are staying) is fine. Most often, if the address you put on the TM7 form is a hotel in their area, they will not even spend further time on verification.

Why not just ask the place you are staying if the did or will file the TM 30 instead of putting hypothetical questions here?

Easier said than done, of course, if there is a language barrier - which seems highly likely in this particular instance if, as he says, the place where he will be staying caters mainly to locals!

Plus the fact that they may never have heard of the dreaded TM30 form, having had no occasion to submit one until now (which makes me wonder whether he might not be better off staying at a place which was more used to catering for foreigners)!

Ojas, did you see post 3?

It seems he has no problem doing it.  There are many ways to get around the lack of language skills today and so many more Thais speaking sufficient English.
