Don Mueang police arrested a 22 year old Japanese university student after she tried to leave Thailand with ten baby otters in her luggage.

She claimed to have bought them at Jatujak weekend market and didn't know there was anything wrong with taking them home.

Channel 8 TV news reported that Kaede Yamaguchi was arrested after a scan of her bag. Inside a basket within her luggage were ten baby otters.

She was bound for Narita and had no permit for the animals.

She told cops that she had bought the animals for 1,000 baht each from a female trader at the market and didn't know it was illegal to have them.

She said she felt sorry for the animals and wanted to look after them in Japan.

She was charged under 1992 protected species' ordinances.

I actually think there is a chance of the Japanese woman telling the truth.

There are numerous stories of Japanese acting naively abroad as they are unfamiliar with blatant law-breaking as they have never encountered it.

However, the surname may prompt me to change my mind.

She “otter” know better (sorry - couldn’t resist).

I pal of mine invented a new curry dish, it's called 'Tarka Vindaloo', similar to Chicken Vindaloo only otter.

(Sorry)

I thought she might fall under the saying attached.

We have shipped dogs and cats in out of Thailand with little effort and at fair cost.  It is one of the things that works rather well in Thailand.

Maybe, she was thinking, if she could buy, she could carry in her country. No?

i actually think she was telling the truth as well. as crazy as that sounds 555

She hoped customs would look the Otter way, (I'm not sorry)..lol

Actually, she was told to buy 10 kettles, but due to a translation mishap, bought 10 water 'otters.

I think it is likely she succumbed to the young oriental woman's propensity for "Oh, how cute! Squeee!".

Even shipped out ex prime ministers and red bull guys also with little effort but i must say that cost a bit in the form of the envelopes So that works well in Thailand also

Indeed, exactly my point.

Just tried to look up the 1992 protected species' ordinances, it talks about importing / exporting animals. Does anyone know if otters themselves are allowed as pets in Thailand?
