Government officials and tourism experts said local and foreign tourists will be flocking to Phnom Penh during the Water Festival, with the number of visitors during the upcoming three-day holiday expected to be much higher than last year’s due to good weather forecasts. The Water Festival, one of the biggest recreational events of the year and a magnet for both local and international tourists, will be taking place from November 2 – 4.

The main attraction of the event will be the famous boat races, but visitors will also be able to enjoy other activities, such as on-stage live performances and a trade fair. Writing in his official Facebook page, Prime Minister Hun Sen said on Tuesday the capital will receive a lot of people from across the country that come to witness, or partake, in the boat races, adding that it will help youngsters better understand their own cultural roots and traditions.

“During the Water Festival, family and friends will have fun together. This is a great opportunity for the younger generations to learn about the country’s traditions, while foreign tourists will get to know about Cambodia’s culture,” Mr Hun Sen wrote. Ho Vandy, secretary-general of Cambodia National Tourism Alliance, pointed out that the Water Festival is not just a popular national holiday, but also a window into Cambodia’s rich cultural heritage.
