I've recently arrived in BKK in order to be nearby my daughter and her family. Intend to stay about 1 year, maybe 3-4 months longer. I'm retired officially though still doing some coaching. Most of the posts here are 2+ years old. Where can I find the most complete and up-to-date info on visa options--if there are any besides the 30-day hassle?

What is you daughters visa or extension of stay status here?

If you are 50 or over you could apply for a one year extension of stay based upon retirement. You would need 800k baht in a Thai bank or proof of 65k baht income proven by a income letter from your embassy or a combination of the 2 totaling 800k baht.

After that a tourist visa would be an option. The best would be a multiple entry tourist visa that allows unlimited 60 day entries for 6 months from the date of issue. By doing an entry just before the visa expires to get a new 60 day entry and then extending it for 30 days allows you to get almost 9 months of total stay from the visa. Then after that you could get a single entry tourist visa at a nearby embassy or consulate and extend the 60 day entry from it for 30 days.

What nationality is your daughter?

  • If she is Thai you could apply for a 1 year extension of stay as her parent. You would need 400K baht in a Thai bank on the day you apply, or 40K pm in certified (by your embassy) income.
  • If she isn't Thai, but has an extension of stay issued by immigration, you might be able to piggy back that.

Another option (better than a tourist visa) if your daughter is Thai is to get a one-year multiple entry Non O visa to visit her. This allows unlimited 90-day stays until the visa expiry date (almost 15 months total by entering just before the visa expires). In most cases, you can get such a visa in your home country.

That is an option, however, ME Non 'O' visas, as a parent, are not so easy to get these days.
