I started using headphones with my desktop computer, I plugged them into an input at the back of the tower, but unfortunately they started going scratchy after a very short time.

My speaker system has a usb port in it, is there any way I could use that bearing in mind that my headphones has the same sort of plug that you would use with a smartphone or ipad.

Is it possible to buy headphones with a plug that you can put into the usb port?

Yes. There are many types but they tend to be headsets (ie with a microphone) rather than just headphones.

I've been using an MS Lifechat for years. Very good for VOIP and Skype.

There are also many models designed for gaming that might suit.

For regular AV use (TV, films, music) I have Beoplay H7 Bluetooth/wired headphones which are very nice but rather expensive. There are various types and models of these wireless headphones also: some Bluetooth, some not. The Sennheiser RS range are good too.

I dont think you will find much choice in shops here, and prices will probably be very high.

If it is part of the speaker system then it is more likely to be for playing back audio files on a USB memory stick.

The computer: you can try a cheap adapter:

Or if you're really cool, get an external sound card. I have a Creative I use w/ my netbook when traveling and it sounds great:
