Siamese fighting fish to be declared national fish next week

By The Nation

The Cabinet has approved the Agriculture Ministry's proposal to declare siamese fighting a national marine creature.

Dr Amornrat Sermwattanakul, acting fishing specialist of the Fishing Department, said the National Fishing Policy Committee has endorsed the ministry's proposal to declare siamese fighting fish one of national marine creatures and the Cabinet has approved it.

The official declaration will be made on November 23, Amornrat said.

"Returning Happiness to the People"

Only “national” by adding Siamese to a very common fish (betta) found in all South East Asia countries.

Why would they declare fresh water species to be a "marine" (salt water) species? Thai science?

Along with Siamese cats,  Siamese Tiger fish, Siamese crocodiles?

What exactly is a "National Fish"?

In my home country, I would presume it's Cod in batter.

Is this one of the Frog under the coconut shell metaphor,  type of things.

my home state fish is the Humuhumunukunukuapua'a .... a marine species.

A pic of the fish would have been fine .

Fighting fish? Damn fish doesn't even have a machete. Where's the gun? Or the knife? Or does the fish only produce it's weapons when an unsuspecting fish cuts into their swimming lane?

Nice fish though.

What does 'siamese fighting' have to do with marine creatures?
