Jim Thompson biographer, Chula lecturer dies

Jim Thompson biographer William Warren passed away in Thailand on Wednesday at the age of 87 from natural causes.

 

Warren was the author of many books including “Jim Thompson: The Unsolved Mystery”, a biography of the renowned US intelligence agent turned silk merchant.

 

Born in the United States in 1930, Warren settled in Bangkok more than 50 years ago, lecturing at Chulalongkorn University for 30 years and writing numerous articles and books about art, culture, architecture and landscape gardening in Thailand and Southeast Asia.

 

Warren knew Thompson personally and his writings are a key source of information about the amazing story of the American, who helped revive the silk industry in Thailand.

 

The James HW Thompson Foundation has named a library after William Warren in appreciation for his ongoing dedication to educate others about Thompson’s life and accomplishments.

 

Funeral services were to be held from Wednesday to Friday at Sala 16 at Wat That Thong each day at 7pm.

 

The cremation will be held on Saturday at 5pm.

RIP. Good life.

A very sad day. I was fortunate enough to know him personally as well as professionally. He had a wit and a way with him that simply disarmed you. He was true gentleman and one of Thailand's real, and sadly last, true expat characters. He loved Thailand, even being more than aware of its issues.

 

I was away last Thursday when it happened, It saddened me greatly to find out as I had not spoken to him for about two years ...... I regret, greatly, not sending that last message I always promised myself I would but found myself too "busy". 

 

A good man has left us. There are not many left these days.
