20 inmates selected for weapons production training program

BANGKOK, 20 November 2017 (NNT) – Thailand's Department of Corrections has chosen 20 inmates to take part in its weapons production training program, designed to give them a chance of employment and public service once they complete their sentences.

The Director-General of the Department of Corrections, Pol Col Narach Sawetanan, reported that a survey of 142 correctional facilities across the nation found 225 inmates serving sentences relating to the production of firearms and weaponry.

Of this number, only 30 had been arrested for producing functioning firearms. After psychological evaluations and other appraisals, the list was narrowed to a final 20 individuals.

All of the inmates are to be transferred to Bang Kwang Central Prison to undergo 1-2 weeks of training, by military specialists, in both theory and practice of weapons production. The inmates will then spend several weeks practicing their new skills before being taken on daily excursions to further hone their abilities with the army. All those who complete the training are to be employed by the state once they complete their sentence so that they may serve Thai society.

Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister, Gen Prawit Wongsuwan, previously approved the Royal Thai Army’s Ordnance Department to oversee the training, saying that the inmates would help Thailand be more self-sufficient and better equipped in the future.

I know i will be frowned upon by a few selected members ,i was on a different thread .

I really like this idea and i hope it works out.

Motivate inmates to do the right thing and use their skills(could be many)to be usefull in society.

Imo this is a far better approach then letting people rot in jail.

Before i get run over by other responses,i do believe people who do wrong need to be punished but that could and should be very diversif.

Have to say, while initially skeptical, if this is the plan, then it's not that bad an idea.

The Americans had a similar plan, they taught the Taliban against the Russians?

I see it as completing an education in small arms weapons building.

So what's this about then? Military budget been spent on big ticket items has it? Re-arming with shivs, lock n socks, and zip guns are we?

It’ll be good for the 20 inmates to learn how to build guns properly, then, the next time they want to commit robberies and other crimes, they’ll each know that they are responsible for the gun they are using for the crime to be fully working.

Honestly, thailand! With the ideas of the people in charge here, you just couldn’t make up a story, even in Hollywood, that would be believed as to what happens here in a daily basis.

I think you got it all wrong, the idea behind this is not to give them better guns if they ever do to decide to commit an armed robbery.

There is nothing in this article that suggest the people selected are convicted armed robbers.

Can not come up with this scenario even in hollywood? Think again,The US government has convicted crimenals working for them!!

What could possibly go wrong?

Just a few humble suggestions -

why not make them manufacture vehicle registration plates? - street lamps ?  - teach them to use motorised garbage cleaners on the beaches ? -  clean up the sewage drain galleries in major cities? - set up a laundry service to wash and press government uniforms ? - help poor rice farmers in the fields with free labour ? -  or even go in schools to warn kids how harsh the law and life in prison can be for crime...anything, but why  make the inmates feel that guns are "good" for society ?...

Rehab ? ...definately and by all means !!!...but not in mixing guns and (ex) crooks, please !! :wai:

all your ideas have been used in Australia but they need manual labor the one thing most crims are dead against so when made to do turns them more against the law. guns a worry people do bite the hand that feeds them

I think it would be a better idea to have convict folding brown envelopes. At least those brown envelopes can be used again to accept bribes...

and so it begins.............there will be weapons fir sale out the back door of every prison in Thailand, will they be fast tracked for jobs in the new proposed Chinese Weapons factories??  Maybe if they pay enough for the jobs I suppose:whistling::post-4641-1156694606:
