You can believe it or not. There are two exceptions to this Cambodian immigration law:

  • It does not apply if you enter the country by air.
  • It does not apply if you have a multiple entry business visa.

In all other cases, the law says you must spend at least one night in Cambodia. It is a longstanding  rule, dating back at least 20 years. Believe me, if immigration want to prevent you leaving they can. In practice, this is a law that is widely flouted, often with some financial inducement to the officials.

Spent a bit of time searching the various Cambo' websites and all state the 24 hour minimum stay.

The only slight difference from your post is one mentioned the e-visa if used at the airport or border also requires a 24 hour stay so it would appear that it can be considered an across the board rule for the normal traveler, my opinion.

SWMBO also pointed out that the hotel was 1900 baht and the border was 1700 baht obviously including the visa, I sent the OP while sitting in the hotel gardens after a few scoops!!! so mixed up the two figures.

You are doing an in out border hop, just pay the fee for the easiest route, its a few times a year just suck it up. drink a few beers at home for a few days instead of going out for them, minibus visa runs are cheaper than DIY, but why risk your life to save a few hundred baht.

i use by own car, either ban pakard or Phu Nam Ron, burma 900 something baht there.

Haven't used Pakard for a good few years. Seem to remember a good walk from Thai booth to Cambo' booth.

Remember quite a good market on the Thai side and a pretty good eatery as well. However was a long time ago so may have changed.

I will be a while before I will do another one anywhere to be honest. Most likely will be a retirement extension April-ish next year.

Wrong. Did it dozens times and only paid at 1 counter. And many people that I know also.

Never ever heard people paying at 2 desks. So I repeat that I managed to pay only 200 and only at one desk. I do not use visa services, I am not 100% retarded yet :-)

Maybe not 100% but I think most posters on this thread would agree you're not to far off

Interested to know why it's seen by you as funny.

Might have been 5 or 6 years since I was there so was interested in any replies that would/might say it's still the same or as I reckon has changed quite a bit.

Strange reaction from you.

I had the same experience one year ago. See the post below.

The officer wanted me to stay at least one night.

As you said, the guys right after Thailand exit can take care of the problem for a cheap fee.
