Ruffian Dick
In Chiang Mai, what does the place name "Kad Farang" mean? Obviously we know what a "farang" is, but what does the "kad" mean here? Online translator doesn't help, I get chopped cabbage or some damn thing. :D
DavidHouston
"กาด" (kad) means "village" in the Northern Thai language. [See Royal Institute Dictionary "กาด ๒ (ถิ่น-พายัพ) น. ตลาด."]
Ruffian Dick
I see, thanks! So it's like "Farang Town"? :D Fair's fair, I guess; if there's a Chinatown and a Little Tokyo etc....
tgeezer
"กาด" (kad) means "village" in the Northern Thai language. [see Royal Institute Dictionary "กาด ๒ (ถิ่น-พายัพ) น. ตลาด."]ตลาด is not town. tgeezer
I googled it and see that it is a 'new' mall in Chiang Mai. I found กาดฟรังวิลเลจ kaad farang village, the actual sign Kad Farang Plaza and maybe not in Chiang Mai, "กาดฟรัง walking street". From the clips I would say that what was filmed couldn't be more Thai. You could construct a plausible story based on ฟรัง being the franc rather than the people if you wanted to but I don't see the point. DavidHouston
Sorry, I typed incorrectly. The meaning should be "market", not "village".
