The biggest Super Full Moon this year will occur on Sunday, December 3, and will be visible from 6pm onward in Thailand, a leading astronomer said on Tuesday.

Saran Poshyachinda, the director of the National Astronomical Research Institute, said next month's phenomenon will occur when the moon's orbit is closest to the earth, and will be about 357,973 kilometres away.

He said the distance will be about 14 per cent shorter than the apogee phenomenon, when the moon is farthest from earth.

At that distance, the Supermoon on December 3 will be about 30 times brighter than normal.

Saran added that the biggest Supermoon for next year will occur on January 2 with the moon being about 356,595 kilometres from the earth.

So, do you feel a special relationship with the moon:

Why is the National Astronomical Research Institute - supposedly an academic institution - releasing a doctored file photo, giving people false expectations? Many will be disappointed when they realize that this "super moon" is almost unnoticably larger than normal and nothing like the picture shown.

I feel a boom in lottery tickets coming on....

File photo fromNational Astronomical Research Institute..............   You really believe that Mr?  They also made the grammatical errors on the caption!!   The water in Pattaya Beach is crystal clear too!  5555

This should bring the maddies and the psychos out on the roads and further boost Thailand's world famous road death toll.

I have seen some really big moons rise at the horizon back home. Just awsome. You gotta catch them when they first come up as they don't look as big latter on but still beautiful. But sadly it will likely be cloudy here.

The Moon at Perigee Syzygy could be about 14% larger than normal (with an increase in tidal forces slightly higher than this). But as you say for an academic institution to release a photo that is wildly exaggerated is not right. The angular size of the Moon is small enough to be covered by the tip of a finger at arm's length, roughly speaking.

No doubt, my wife will want to give Rahu whisky, cokes, and cigarettes to celebrate the occasion.

Don't tell the world butthead tour duo about this super moon.
