BEIRUT (Reuters) - Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Tuesday that Saudi Arabia presents Iran as an enemy because it wants to cover up its defeats in the region.

"Saudi Arabia was unsuccessful in Qatar, was unsuccessful in Iraq, in Syria and recently in Lebanon. In all of these areas, they were unsuccessful," Rouhani said in the interview live on state television. "So they want to cover up their defeats."

The Sunni Muslim kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Shi'ite Iran back rival sides in the wars and political crises throughout the region.

Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince called the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, "the new Hitler of the Middle East" in an interview with the New York Times published last week, escalating the war of words between the arch-rivals.

Tensions soared this month when Lebanon’s Saudi-allied Prime Minister Saad Hariri resigned in a television broadcast from Riyadh, citing the influence of Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon and risks to his life.

Hezbollah called the move an act of war engineered by Saudi authorities, an accusation they denied.

Hariri returned to Lebanon last week and suspended his resignation but has continued his criticism of Hezbollah.

Iran, Iraq, Syria and Russia form a line of resistance in the region that has worked towards stability and achieved "big accomplishments", Rouhani said in the interview, which was reviewing his first 100 days in office in his second term.

Separately, Rouhani defended his government’s response to an earthquake in western Iran two weeks ago, a major challenges for his administration.

The magnitude 7.3 quake, Iran’s worst in more than a decade, killed at least 530 people and injured thousands. The government’s response has become a lightning rod for Rouhani’s hard-line rivals, who have said the government did not respond adequately or quickly to the disaster.

Supreme Leader Khamenei, the highest authority in Iran, has also criticized the government response.

Hard-line media outlets have highlighted the role played by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, the most powerful military body in Iran and an economic powerhouse worth billions of dollars, in helping victims of the earthquake.

Government ministries have provided health care for victims and temporary housing has been sent to the earthquake zone, but problems still exist, Rouhani said in the interview.

There is some truth to this. The Saudis are enemy number one, as far as the western world is concerned. They have been the worlds largest sponsors of terror, for at least 30 years now, spending billions annually for direct terror support, of the funding of extremist, wahhabi schools. Wahhabism is the most toxic form of religion on the planet. It is toxic, evil, nasty, hateful, vengeful, and has no place in the modern world. Both Wahhabism and  Sharia law, should be resisted with all the power we have, by all within the western world. It is a scourge. It is dark cloud. The intent behind it is positively dark. It is the absolute absence of joy and peace. And what exists within that vacuum? Evil, atrocity, death, and the support of such. Blind men. All blind men.

The Saudis have fooled the US for a long time now, primarily due to their oil and their wealth. Trump continues to allow himself to get conned by these monsters. I do not. Research it. Read up on these insects. Educate yourself. This is a heinous nation, and an even more heinous faith. Or lack thereof.

Not sure if it's a lost-in-translation thing, faulty logic process or just political waffle for public consumption. Saudi Arabia is not calling Iran "an enemy" because it tries to "conceal defeat in the region". If Saudi Arabia did not consider Iran to be "an enemy", there would be no conflict and hence no "defeat in the region" to conceal. Iran is an enemy to Saudi Arabia, and Saudi Arabia does fail (or suffers defeats) countering it.

What does you post have to do with the OP?

And as much as Saudi Arabia does push forth its extreme brand of Islam, with related effects, there is less conclusive evidence of direct state support afforded for terrorists (outside of the region). That does not in any way make Saudi Arabia benign, just not quite what is claimed. Quite a lengthy discussion of these on a recent topic.

Success or failure depends on what your objectives are. The US has seemed to lose all the wars it has gone into in the ME except Kuwait. I read that perhaps the reason for this is that the intention was not to 'win' but merely to wreck Iraq, Syria, Libya so as to weaken the potential enemies of Israel. Similarly with Saudi, what exactly is their objective in all of their nefarious affairs. I'm not sure that they have 'failed'. Syria is in ruins, Lebanon is in a state of total confusion and Yemen is starving to death. Yes, their hoped for war between the US and Iran is taking a long time to come to fruition despite their new alliance with Israel, but they have jointly made the US renege on the JCPOA...perhaps we simply don't understand what they hoped to achieve. They (MBS) have also robbed a huge number of rich and influential people without any due process and outside the law and have receive accolades in the western press....not a bad result.

Another nothing post.

Starts from a dubious premise. Goes on to apply it wholesale to another situation. Piles some clueless assertions. Sprinkles a bit of conspiracy theory, and adds some unrelated drivel to boot. The "conclusion" doesn't even have much to do with all the previous rubbish.
