New indictments for rice-pledging convict

Acting NACC secretary-general Worawit Sookboon

THE NATIONAL Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) yesterday forwarded a case to the Attorney-General regarding former Commerce Ministery secretary Weerawut Wajanaphukka for new indictments and a trial after it decided earlier this month that he should be charged for having accumulated “unusual wealth”.

Acting NACC secretary-general Worawit Sookboon said the NACC suspected that the former government official was unusually rich after charging him and former commerce minister Boonsong Teriyapirom with malfeasance of duty over government-to-government deals under the Yingluck Shinawatra government’s rice distribution scheme.

A sub-panel created by the NACC to investigate Weerawut’s wealth found that he could not clarify the origin of more than Bt896 million in assets.

Acting on the sub-panel’s report, the NACC decided earlier this month to charge him with having unusual wealth. Worawit said the NACC had also been investigating the wealth of five more politicians as well as three senior officials involved in the rice-pledging scheme and would reveal its findings to the public.

The Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Political Office Holders on August 25 sentenced Boonsong and 19 others to jail terms of 24 to 48 years for their roles in executing fake government-to-government rice deals during the previous Yingluck government’s tenure, causing Bt16.9-billion in financial damage to the state. Weerawut, the third former official convicted, fled the country before the court ruling.

“unusual wealth”.

With so many high ranking officials and people in powerful positions

getting caught with billions swindled from either the people or

government's coffers, it should become know "as usual wealth" and

rest of them who didn't engaged in scamming either as

"unusually honest".....

And the 600 million Prayuth made illegal to talk about, and the national police chief having declared assets of 1 billion baht. Just 2 glaring examples that show what a farce the exercise is, I would bet my bottom dollar that the % of cabinet members and high ranking that are unusually wealthy is between 99 and 100

The PAD leaders who occupied an international airport. Hmm... Later...

Abhisit and the police stations, Suthep and the land deals. Hmm... Later...

But, lets make sure we get the 'Reds'! Now! Today! This minute!

Nope, no politics here. Move along...

I thought the police-stations were Suthep ?

And Abhisit, like Yingluck, ended his premiership with his wealth relatively-unchanged ?

I do in-principle like this idea, of public statements of their apparent-wealth when entering/leaving power, wish it might be applied to more-developed farang countries, would give the reptiles lots more to write about !

Instead of having to rely upon leaks like the Panama-Papers, or 'Private Eye', for one's inside-information.

The PAD leaders are convicted  to pay damage, Sonthi even jailed

So his excuse of finding it down the back of the sofa, did not work.

Haven't the PAD leaders been / are being dealt with already?

Meanwhile the selectivity of applying laws, selectivity in both who they are applied to and how they are applied will continue until the justice system is completely reformed. But don't hold your breath!

In the meantime, even if a few get convicted, it's still better than none.

is the govt short of cash?

This sum is staggering!  It's a bit more than pinching paper clips from the office.  How many more are there higher up the chain?

I could make a guess at its origins.

mate, you really need to get your facts straight and not take them from the reds hand book on propaganda, you seem to be getting worse. Suthep yes, he does need to be investigated, the pad leaders have already been charged etc so you must have missed that, maybe you werent here when it was announced in thai visa and abhisit's didnt show any unusual wealth when leaving. As for the reds/ptp, they were corrupt so being caught out is expected, at least they are actually getting some of the corrupt ones where they belong, something that has never really happened here before but hey, make it political so you can spread your innuendo, pathetic

Anybody going to jail here??? No???

Maybe a prize could be awarded each year  for the most unusually honest person. The prize could be 100 bhat so as not to corrupt them
