Hi everyone! I have some questions about changing visas, hoping someone can shed some light. My brain is fried trying to figure it out LOL

My husband and I are Americans in Thailand (Chiang Mai) on ED Visas (language) that were issued Dec 22 2016.

Our last extension of stay here expires Dec 10.

Our 90-day (address) reporting is due Dec 13.

We plan to go to Lao Dec 8. We'll be there for 15 days, and apply for single entry tourist visas while we're there so we can come back to Chiang Mai.

In case it matters, we're flying to Udon Thani, then traveling by van to Nongkhai to cross Friendship Bridge, and applying for the tourist visa in Vientiane.

When we return to Chiang Mai, we'll be staying at the same address we have previously reported to Immigration.

So, we have some questions about what we have to do (if anything) before we leave. Of course, we'd rather not spend an entire day at Immigration if we don't need to :)

Question 1: Do we need to "cancel" our student visas before we go to Lao? If so, how do we do that, and do we need a letter or anything from the language school?

Question 2: Do we need re-entry permits if we're coming back on a new visa?

Question 3: Do we need to do the 90-day reporting before we leave?

Question 4: Do we need to report to someone that we are leaving the country? If so, who and how? (The last time we left the country  - to visit America for 2 wks- we thought our landlord was responsible for reporting when we leave/re-enter, but the next time we did our extension of stay we had to pay a fine because we hadn't reported)

Question 5:  When we come back to CM with shiny new tourist visas, do we have to report to immigration again to report our address and "re-start" the 90-day reporting thing? (we do plan to stay 3 months on the tourist visa, so we'd be leaving the country again right around the 90-day mark)

Thanks in advance for any help!

1. I believe you are currently on an "extension of stay" based on attending schoool, obtained from your local immigration-office.  You may get mixed-answers on this - but to avoid any problems, I would get a letter from the school stating that your schooling will end on the date you plan to leave the country.  Take that to immigration, and they will cancel your ED-extension, with the date provided on the letter.

2.  No re-entry permit needed.

3. No 90-day reporting if you Leave The Country *before* your next 90-day reporting date.

4 and 5. I believe the fine you received was for you or your landlord not reporting your address to immigration via a "TM-30" form.  You do not need to report your departure, but you should report your address to immigration the first day they are open after you return.  This will avoid a fine in the future, if you go to get an extension of your Tourist Visa.

Others will help on the rest of your questions but regarding Q1 yes you do need to cancel it or at least have a letter

Halfway down the page

Immigration at Nong Khai will not let you leave via there if you have not cancelled  or have a letter

Thank you!

Confusing. Does cancelling the visa only apply to ED visas that were extended? I have an ED visa that was valid for 90 days. I left the school after the first week and was told I can just remain here for the validity period of the visa and then just leave. Am I missing something?

Cancellation only applies to an extension of stay. A multiple entry visa would remain valid. Any non extended permissions of stay remain valid.
