"Starboy" - top Nigerian scammer - among latest arrests in Thai PM's crackdown

A top Nigerian scammer known in the black community as "Starboy" was arrested yesterday along with five friends all from the west African country.

Antonio Joscarlos, along with a Thai woman called Sukanya, had used a fake Facebook profile to con middle aged Thai men looking for love.

They used a picture of a beautiful female US soldier and pretended to be her - they were chatting to 38 men at the time of their arrest at JP Smart Condominium in Pak Kret.

Victims were persuaded in the "romance scam" to send money to their accounts.

Taken into evidence were a computer notebook, ten phones, bankbooks, cash and other valuables.

Also arrested yesterday were five friends of "Starboy" - all Nigerians - running investment scams tricking Thai couples. Three million baht in funds was found as part of this subsequent investigation.

The crime led to connections in Senegal.

Leading the crackdown ordered by prime minister Prayut Chan-ocha and deputy Prawit Wongsuwan is acting tourism police chief Surachet Hakpan who said that romance scams and bogus investment schemes were causing a lot of trouble for the country.

The former relied on those looking for love while the latter relied on people's greed.

All those arrested have been initially detained on fraud and false pretenses charges though Daily News reported that false imprisonment and assault may be added to the rap sheet for some of them.

The crackdown is targeting mostly those in the African community using tourism as a cover for illegal activities.

Causing trouble for idiots in the country would probably be more accurate, of whom sadly, there are plenty. It is the scum of the earth who prey on them, so I hope the cops find the rest of this scumbags crew and get rid of them all.

These scams are present in every country on earth, not limited to Thailand. Also same scammers working in Vietnamese usually duping women who are afraid of being branded 'old maids' by their families and community for being unmarried after age 30.

  1. Agreed. Seems like RTP is on to something these days. They have been netting romance and phone scammers,  kiddy diddlers(pedophiles), overstayers and fake passport holders, those running from the law(fugitives), losers selling Thai flags and wannabe Hells Angels thugs. All scum of the earth! Well done RTP. Keep going after these criminals. Whatever their race,  lock up and deport these losers! The kiddy diddlers send them to the hardest of the prisons.

Maybe you should personally chop their balls off?

Just awful. And of course Thais are so vunerable as they never ripp foreigners off who stay in the land of fake smile.

Why no fluorescent jacket, and a Rayban to cover the eyes ?

Also why no sofa, on the floor. Is this color discrimination ?

I was recently a victim of a scam and I dumped all the information the police needed to make an arrest on their desk but it appears I wasn't conned out of enough to make it worth their efforts.

This was advertised on baht and sold. They have been told twice but when I last checked they were still adverising on their website.

Unfortunately, there are legitimate types of relationship that follow this pattern. Usually involving a man over 50 and a girl around 20. It's obviously more about money (although the men may not think so for some reason), so there are people ripe for exploitation.

What was the scam?

I would see myself banned in this forum if I were to write on these Nigerians!

Because of the situation in a lot of poor countries they grow up as scammers.

Nigeria being one of the worst.

Now doesn't that feel much better than chasing down bare arsed beach smoking vapours well done ...

How about; "Hopefully, just one of many, soon to be arrested and jailed, before deportation after bio metrics are taken."  (so they can't sneak back in.)

Perfect!  I coundnt have put it better myself.

Another normal day in Thailand...police only do the job they're paid to do when the PM specifically tells them to.

Then it's described as 'a crackdown', rather than the ongoing fight against crime.

Classic reconditioned scooters. They plagiarized a genuine website and professed to be operating from a Si Siket.

Good work RTP . Please ensure toughest punish ever.

there are many other scammers like blank magic : Pattaya Black magic master Ajran Koh scamming millions of bhat from foreigners in the mane of spells , let these bloody bastards be locked up.

well beside vulnerable foreigners falling for the traps there are many Thai’s involved they are so greedy they should be Taken in to account too.i have personally know a Thai mother who used to work in bar got married with German man moved to Germany leaning her other husband and kids back , gave birth to a daughter who is in her 20’s now and turned her in to a gold digger. And she keeps on chsinging boyfriend and trying to rip them off in the name of love . And the poor German man had a mysterious death right after few years of marriage .

and now that daughter is following the oath of her mother, being a German National tries to catch big fishes but unfortunately she is nothing but the same as her mother and hope to see karma treats her back the same way .

all these love scams destroys people’s lives and often end up losing their life’s savings .

and those who are behind such heinous acts must face the harsher punishment

All african people are is a sort of criminal way off living.

I don't know one person who makes a honest living, the all steal, rip off, deal drugs and scam.
