Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL)

Featured Replies

In case anybody around Chiang Mai is interested in breeding BSFL (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hermetia_illucens) easily, cleanly and undisturbingly at home to get rid of almost all kitchen/fruit waste by letting these critters produce free high-grade animal food (mainly poultry + fish), and powerful bio fertilizer:

Quick question: are they seasonal where you are or do you get them all year?

I'm in Bangkok and without putting much effort into it they have appeared in my compost bucket over the past couple of years but it seems like they are only there from around September to December. All the larva I collected were released in the hope of getting adults back to re-lay but then nothing for months. However, it's not much of a sample to go on, hence my question to you. We will soon be moving to a more spacious place where I'll try attracting them with more care.

Thanks,

Adrian.

Here in Chiang Mai we have them all around the year even though the flies are seemingly less active laying eggs in the cold season.
The flies are attracted by the larvae and their food to lay their eggs above them, so they can fall directly into the food after hatching. So it makes sense to use a container and put something they like to lay their eggs in above it, I use a bunch of cardboard layers.
Almost every morning (the larvae wander upwards and then fall into the bucket mainly during night time) you can't see the bottom of the bucket anymore, meaning estimated 300 and more larvae, enough for our tilapia fish pond.

That's good to know, thanks.
