PARIS (Reuters) - President Emmanuel Macron announced on Wednesday he would overhaul French media legislation this year to fight the spread of "fake news" on social media which he said was a threat to liberal democracies.

Macron has said he and his team were victims of fake news and a major data hack during his election campaign last year.

Since coming to office in May 2017, he has particularly pointed the finger at Russian media, accusing TV channel RT of sowing disinformation about him via its website and social media during the campaign.

"If we want to protect liberal democracies, we must have strong legislation," Macron said in a New Year's address to journalists, adding that the reform he envisaged would also change the role of France's media watchdog CSA.

"At election time, on internet platforms, the rules applying to content won't be exactly the same," Macron said.

"There will be increased transparency requirements for internet platforms regarding sponsored content, with the aim of making public the identity of those who place the ads and also limiting the amount of them."

A new emergency procedure in the event of fake news appearing would allow a judge to delete some content, close a user's account, or block access to a website, he said.

Macron, who has cut back on the close relations his predecessor, Francois Hollande, had with the media, said the authorities must keep their distance with the press.

"The closeness which we had on occasions got used to was, I think, neither good for those in government nor for the journalists," he said.

"It sometimes led to more importance being given to backroom chatter than to official comments," he said, calling for a "healthy distance" to be maintained with the press.

WOW !!  If this goes as reported, then there is only one conclusion to be drawn.  Macron has recognised how the 'liberal' politicians and journalists in USA are distrusted and have been rejected by the majority, and how their 'mutual complicity' is a large contributor to that rejection.

France has always been a socialist country at heart, which means the majority have always allowed the Govt to regulate/interfere with their lives. This is one of the few things that IMO needs to be regulated (fake news), but it will never happen in USA to the extent it can happen in France due to the USA 1st Amendment.  But perhaps if this is successful in France, it may lead to regulations in USA that require a more open and disclosure of what is really 'Opinion' versus that which is portrayed as 'News'.

Completely false!!! The brain dead FOX news fans are in no way the majority. FOX is the fake news but don't let the facts get in the way of what you want to believe.

When legitimate news agencies make a mistake they spend far more time correcting their mistakes. FO and other like it tell blatant lies over and over again but never apologize or retract their lying statements even when confronted with the facts.

You ignorance is dangerous to society. I believe that any broadcasters should be held responsible for the things they say. Freedom of speech should not include spreading blatant lies.

Fox tells the truth other channels won't discuss. The BBC lies constantly as does the Guardian and CNN and BBC.  Macro is an elitist and hypocrite.

Maybe if certain governments and their "intelligence" agencies weren't so authoritarian and secretive and would stop doing evil covert things globally under the guise of "national security", there wouldn't be a bunch of citizens seeking the truth of what is actually going on from other sources because the corporate media sure seems to be avoiding reporting anything that might get the people riled up about the aforementioned evil deeds.

Maybe you can come up with a few examples of the constant lies?

Please stay on topic.   For the purposes of the forum, we generally exclude news sources which have a history of making up stories and of not fact checking.   Bias is a fact of life, and because a source is biased does not preclude it from being used.   If it makes up stories or prints stories that are made up, then it is not used.  Networks, newspapers and other sources may chose to not report on something.   That is not Fake, that is a choice.

Fox News and CNN, for example do fact check their stories and so are used.   Opinion pieces are acceptable, and quite frequently are very biased, but they are an opinion on a REAL event.

I would assume the French, as well as other countries, will be looking at the deliberate spreading of untrue information is what will be targeted.

Wow, there actually is one poster who reacted with sadness to this very reasonable post. Unsurprisingly that poster is the very person who through his handle name proclaims to be bored with all the BS (BuaBS).

Talk about reality disconnect!:clap2:
