jenny2017 Posted January 13, 2018 Posted January 13, 2018 No idea why every new update seem to switch an important tool off, the System restore Point. I've just enabled my System restore ( again), created a restore Point, but it doesn't seem to work. Has anybody encountered problems with the restore program, or is it just me?
Pib Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 It's not just you...from googling I see lots of people encounter what you are encountering in terms of System Restore Point getting turned off by Win 10. And the googling indicates Win 10 turns off System Restore Point "by default" which means you need to turn it back on. And what do you mean "it doesn't seem to work" after you turn it back on? After you turn it back on your need to manually "create" a restore point as there is no setting for automatic creation like every X-days or something. However, Windows does automatically create a restore point for critical updates. However, so far I have not encountered the problem the best I can remember if when you say "updates" you mean the monthly updates. However, if you mean when Win 10 updates to a new version like from 1703 to 1709 I can't say for sure based on my memory. I also run Win 10 Pro.

It seems that each "big update", the ones from 1703 to 1709, for example switch the former settings off and deletes any existing restore points. I'm aware that you have to create a System Restore Point manually, but that doesn't mean that you can actually restore the machine to this date. I've tried that a week ago after a new manual System Restore Point, but it didn't work. It's a nice alternative to restore the whole system, but only when it works well.
Pib Posted January 15, 2018 Posted January 15, 2018 (edited) Yes, when Win 10 does a major update like 1703 to 1709 it deletes all manual restore points you created....just like it will deleted the listing of Installed Updates when you go to the Security & Update area. And don't confuse a Restore Point with the "Reset this PC" or "Rollback to a Previous Version of Windows." They are different animals. A Restore Point just restores selected, critical Windows files & settings to a previous point in time; not your data files. It does not roll you back to a previous version. A Reset this PC just re-installs the current version. Say you had just been upgraded from 1703 to 1709, well, if you selected Reset This PC it will basically just re-install 1709; not 1703. Now, if your Rollback to a Previous Version of Windows (if offered in your settings), then that does roll you back to like 1703. However, after around 10 days of a version upgrade the ability/offering to rollback probably will not be available anymore. Edited January 15, 2018 by Pib
