The problem here is that it actually, unfortunately, looks like this only regards employment in a already existing Thai company. As I assume you will fall under working and not investment.

Well, i worked  more than 10 years as expert/specialist in Thailand in one of these categories.

From my experience it will be quite difficult to find a private company which is willing to pay such high salary in a long-term contract. The big guys - perhaps , but are they the target employers here ?

Working in Thai government related organisations and agency has the same challenge. In my case they paid 10% of my salary, rest comes from funding abroad ..Innovation and such expert work should be independent from the level of the salary, but dependent from expertise and knowledge.

I personally switched to consultant based services, worked and paid based on project milestone . This makes me independent from obstacles from organisational structures within companies and alike, but capable to provide a better support to them.

What nothing for a owning a bar or a massage parlor.:shock1:

you have to take it to the new generation S-CURVE,

like inventing a massage app that will adjust the hand pressures to the customers body curves,

or a high-tech bar with sensors in the glasses, that will

tell when a customer is about to finish his drink.

I waited for this visa for like Six months, since the news came around August and I NEVER EVER thought I would be this disappointed.

IT IS THE SAME STATUS QUO as was BEFORE

Where is the Equation with RISK...

The IT Industry was BUILT on RISK not on Laws and Status Quo.

Where is the Mavericks Visa?

Mavericks built the entire internet not people who love 9 to 5 jobs ...

No Country wants to take Risk on Human Ingenuity...Even if 100 People Fail...Thailand needs one guy to succeed and put the country on Map..Like how Skype was invented in Estonia and now Estonia is the second most popular start up country in Europe with a population of just 1.3 million.

I can't work in Europe due to Cold Climate which my body cannot handle it properly as i get sick most of the time there. Thailand will FAIL in this as many have noted as most likely people who could succeed are 20 year olds with no 200k Salary and No PH.D background...

Bottom Line..MONEY RULES...Not Creativity...Smart Visa Puts you in Reverse Gear With Everything with the meaning of what Renovation Stands for..

A guy who has 200k / month Salary ...WHY WOULD HE THINK HARD to Innovate anything ..lol.....Necessity is the mother of invention..:stoner:...This visa is a JOKE to me personally as far as Innovation is concerned

Apple, Microsoft, Google were all built in a garage ...those guys never had 200k THB/month salary

Here lies the contradiction.

The government estimated less than 1,000 people would apply for the smart visas so the would not affect the local labour market, Kobsak said.

They might be astonished about getting a far higher number of visa applications  then just 1000 ...

Chinese investing those ~650k $ in "targeted industries",

silently pulling their money out and investing in other assets after they have got their papers,

and at the same time, "their spouses and children can move and work in Thailand"...

So, go to America. You're looking for something that doesn't exist in Thailand, then you get disappointed when you don't find it.

No, they didn't.

The ARPANET was built based on contracts from the Department of Defense.

The WWW was invented by the scientist Berners-Lee at CERN, a huge research center.

It's not about innovation from the scratch.

It's about applying IoT, Big Data, AI,... etc. in the industry.

Sorry, it seems, you are 30 years too late ...

Nowadays, Start-Ups normally do not start in a garage, but are founded with enormous amounts of venture capital.

Honest question, who makes 200k/month in Thailand? I wonder how many actual positions paying that much even exist in the entire country. This sounds like a hyper specialized visa for an extremely small minority of people.

people who make 200K a month don't sit and write all day in thai visa

This is a common line I hear from people who don't actually know how the internet works. That was just the mere inception but all the interesting stuff came later and it's development was (and still is) extremely  decentralized and contributions across all the various software and hardware layers are LEGION. It would take months to properly document the actual history in full.

Seems like a great option so Thailand can get more than just retired people moving here long term .

Exactly.

Thailand don't need more diluted and whining retirees playing with younger gals (in legal age).

This is a good move I'd say. Finally folks with proper knowledge can come and provide with some new technology.

Yeah...great achievements. China introduces 10-year visas for specialists.

And you can see the results don't you?

This is the first step to bring non wrinkled people to the country that actually can contribute with some technology.

Like it or not. It's happening;)

I'm sure  they'll love  having to report their whereabouts every 90 days...........for 20 million!!

I am sure the people we are taking about will never see Chang Watthana. Companies have administrative assistants and they keep all the executives and their families happy by doing all the time consuming errands. ?

Why is there such anger at people that go to college, work hard and make great wages at stressful jobs?  Not as easy as it looks or everyone would do it. And no one cares what a bunch of guys that don’t qualify financially think. These visa holders are not going to have the same visa hassles as you because they are more wanted by the Thai government on a needed basis and have personal assistants and lots of income. Pure economics nothing personal.

Nothing personal. But given the odds of you or anyone else starting the next Apple, Google or Amazon, as a government official in charge of the EEC and the Thai economy I would choose to welcome all the 200,000 baht a month executives that I can possibly attract. Peace.

Correct me if I'm wrong mate.

This visa has nothing to do with IT

"The five New S-Curve industries are automation and robotics, aviation and logistics, biochemicals and eco-friendly petrochemicals, digital businesses, and medical hubs"

I'm heading for the biochemicals in the near future;)

And while we are on it, SKYPE is not Estonian invention...

The more Thailand can do to attract/entice talented thinkers and producers, the more it will benefit.  Too bad, they rape, pillage and salt the fields, every step of the way.  Foreign startups here are saddled with,  uhmmm...lets say Thai, baht hungry partners, that can be,.....very Thai (demanding) in "their" accounting and "shareholder disbursements"......was that politically correct enough?

Yep, looks like Thailand just handed Vietnam a big prize.  I guess they want Vietnam to be the place the next generation of entrepreneurs build great tech.

Or maybe key players "benefit" from the existing, corrupted visa-system, so don't want any changes for the "good of the country" - just the status-quo, for the good of brown-envelopes.

If I had a time-machine, I would.  No point going there now, to pay high-overhead for a lousy quality of life.  There are many nicer places to live where the Internet is available (and that's all you need).

If coming from a low-wage / impoverished-nation, it may be both tempting and accessible - because the alternative is even worse - and there are an abundance of "American" (traitor) companies willing to throw American-citizen college-grad's lives into the trash-can, in order to hire a low-paid, indentured-servant type worker on a visa, instead.

I was hoping this visa would open up opportunities for some of those young Americans (and from other countries) with degrees, ability, etc - but no - clearly not.  They are leaving the USA in droves, and will form their businesses in other countries, instead.
