Department of Tourism to request 20 billion baht to rehabilitate nation's tourist sites

BANGKOK, 22nd January 2018 (NNT) – The Department of Tourism is to request 20 billion baht to undertake two programs to rehabilitate and enrich the nation’s emerging tourism sites.

Department of Tourism Director-General Anan Wongbenjarat remarked today that a rise in the number of domestic and foreign tourists visiting the nation’s many attractions has created a burden on the country's environmental resources as well as tourism facilities, and there is now a need to support their rejuvenation.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports has tasked the Department of Tourism with drafting a rehabilitation program based on its current policy of encouraging more tourism to grassroots areas with tourism potential, as well as to ensure the sustainability of the sites and the communities that surround them.

The department has drafted two such programs requiring a combined budget of up to 20 billion baht. The two programs will contain 2,639 projects, 1,843 targeting minor cities in 55 provinces and another 796 projects for 22 lesser known districts in major cities.

The areas will be further divided between important tourist destinations and minor destinations. In major cities, the projects will mostly concern suburban areas and communities surrounding airports.
