BANGKOK, 23 January 2018 (NNT) - Commerce Minister Sonthirat Sonthijirawong says he believes allowing the sugar price to float would have a positive impact on sugar based products.

According to the minister, retailers and food manufacturers will be invited to a meeting to discuss the possibility of lowering prices of sugar and sugar-based products after the global price of sugar recently declined.

The meeting will be held this month or soon after the Office of the Cane and Sugar Board releases its official announcement to float the price.

Despite the floating price policy, the minister insisted that sugar would remain on the list of controlled household goods.

Sonthirat also said that, by letting the sugar price float, prices of soft drinks, baked goods and other food items will decline, in line with the global sugar price.

Meanwhile, consumers are urged to call 1569 if they spot overpriced sugar products.

of fruit and veg,i am wondering when the price of potatoes and onions

are going to come down.

regards worgeordie

At the moment the sugar cane price is 800 baht/ton  ,it was 700 baht/ton a few weeks ago ,the lowest it has been for a few years ,and they is no government subsidies ,sugar cane is a crop that can be harvested for 3-4 years ,the initial  planting costs are high ,farmers need  3-4 years to pay back  the investment, so farmers have no chose but to except  low prices .

Thay is no way the price will drop not while middlemen and food producers can buy sugar from the mills cheap.

But if sugarcane price drops to much, farmers will stop growing cane ,it is happening around where I live ,

Molasses is a by-product of sugar cane , which they  will get processed in to alcohol ,to produce gasohol, (along with cassava ).

So , less sugar cane , less molasses, less gasohol, all this might lead to increased oil imports, not what the government wants .

The sugar price needs to increase ,not only to help the farmers but to help the ever-growing problem of obesity in Thailand food manufacturers ,to keep costs down ,might put less sugar  in there processed food , wishful thinking.
