rooster59
Runaway trailer kills motorcyclist, crashes into Phichit shop By The Nation A trailer loaded with construction sand broke free from its truck engine and crashed into a pickup, two motorbikes and a roadside shop, fatally injuring a motorcyclist on Saturday afternoon. Police said the accident happened at a bridge on Ratraj Rangsan road in Phichit’s Taphan Hin district. The trailer of an 18-wheel truck broke free while it was crossing the bridge. It hit a pickup truck, a motorcycle and another motorcycle with side cart before it ploughed into a roadside animal food shop. A motorcyclist, Sarawut Meethong, 20, was seriously injured and died on the way to hospital. The truck driver, Rod Panphet, 51, told police that he was driving at about 40 kilometres per hour and he did not know why the trailer disconnected from his vehicle. RIP regards worgeordie He always thought the fifth wheel was his spare car wheel. Obviously, he didn't expect to find a wheel on the back of his Unit, so far from the road. RiP to the innocent motorcyclist.

RIP regards worgeordie I wonder if Thai law also insists on chains attaching trailer to truck/car? No doubt western countries have such requirements, as they do in Oz, NZ. Total reliance on the ball coupling is risky.

Classic Ray
Even if security chains were compulsory, it wouldn’t mean that they would be provided or used. Helmets and seat belts are compulsory but few people protect themselves or their children. Cultural stupidity and fatalistic attitude to life. RIP regards worgeordie No, it was not an articulated lorry (semi-trailer) but an 18 wheel combination i.e. a ten wheel truck towing an eight wheel trailer. The trailer came off or broke the coupling and veered into traffic.

In civilized countries ,those trailers are also attached to the truck with chains,to prevent this type of thing happening, maybe they will make that a law to do that here. regards worgeordie
RayD
While driving my bike I came across one of these, truck at the top of a hill, trailer at the bottom on its side in a ditch. It didn't take much imagination to see what would have happened if I had been following that vehicle up the hill. I now make a point of not doing that. Not the same but even so... RIP to that poor young man.

Really? Of course you don't.
worgeordie
When the trailer detached from the truck,it would have torn off the air line to the brakes on the trailer, which should have caused the trailer to stop dead, so once again looks like brake failure.! regards worgeordie
