Hi All,

The aircon on my aging vigo died the day after i'd had the car serviced(!). Toyota say it'll cost THB 30k plus an overnight stop in the garage (Toyota Samui) to put right. Does anyone know of any other reliable places on the Island where I might get a 2nd opinion/quicker service (ie parts won't have to be ordered from afar before they can even start)?

Does anyone know if Dan Autos or the place opposite Bandon Jct could replace the entire unit?

         Thanks :)

Why do you think the whole unit needs replacing ? If it failed just after service, I would first off suspect they unplugged something. Failing that, it could be just a sensor. Troubleshoot first - save a bundle.

That's what Toyota said after they had done the troubleshooting. The car had nearly caught fire or so it seemed but was able to drive when the ac was turned off. Scared the crap out of me. I initially thought the engine was dry, clutch was burning or brakes were knackered which made no sence as it had just been serviced so I made them come and get it and that was their conclusion.

If so it sounds like the bearings in the compressor seized. Stopped turning and the belt burned off 30K is way way too much, that is a price for the part at a Toyota dealer. A dedicated aircon place should be able to source a second hand one easy. This is basically - except for a few valves - the only moving part in the whole system. If no independant aircon place, try an auto repair place. Quick fone call to BKK, ship it down with some new belts, I would be surprised if it was 10K.

This company is in CNX - have a Thai speaker call if needed. Huge inventory, clean, high quality replacement parts.

You can fix it for 10.000 baht, the shop opposite Bandon hospital junction to ring road.

And I guess they fixed it while you waited or went shopping in BigC. ?

It looked like a compressor and a damaged radiator-like-thing although I haven't a clue how we managed it other than the car being old (13 years from new). The all up cost was just over 20k using new parts.
