Interior Minister Sar Kheng said yesterday that the government will establish an inter-ministerial working group in Banteay Meanchey province to resolve issues for illegal migrant workers deported from Thailand. Mr Kheng said the working group would be comprised of four ministries, including the Interior Ministry, Labour Ministry, Ministry of Social Affairs and Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“I will ask to create an inter-ministerial working group to standby in Poipet city to aid returning workers and gather information from them after they are deported by Thai authorities,” he said. “We have seen roughly 80 to 100 labourers sent back every day.”

“Our authorities cannot ignore this issue because we have to be responsible for our citizens even if they seek work abroad illegally,” he added. More than 90,000 Cambodian migrant workers were deported or fled from Thailand in the first half of 2017, a 65 percent increase from the same period in 2016.
