Days Off
Before moving to Thailand I was diagnosed with a sensitivity to gluten that appears to be related to an autoimmune issue. Back home in the US I was easily able to modify my diet to eliminate gluten. I thought that would be easy enough to do in Asia as well...but I'm now finding that I have a similar response to rice same same as gluten. In the US I would eat rice occasionally, but not every day. In Thailand, it was often eaten 2-3...sometimes 4 meals a day. The most visible reaction is acne. I'm a male almost 42 years old that has problems with acne on my chest and back. In the US I would go to the Mayo clinic in Jacksonville where you have the luxury of a multi-discipline approach to solving your medical problems. It's easy for them to attack your problem with a team and then follow-up with specialists as needed. Does anything like that exist here in Bangkok? I would like to have a team of at least a rheumatologist, gastroenterologist, and maybe a dermatologist. While the symptoms are manifested on the skin...ultimately the problem lies in my gut or immune system. Do I need to consult with each discipline separately? Or is there a facility where a "team" approach can be taken? I appreciate any thoughts or recommendations. On a side note, I would also like to see a dermatologist for annual skin cancer screening. Is there a separate doc that would be good for this? BTW...It completely blows living in Asia and not being able to eat rice or gluten.
dddave
Have you tried brown or what is sometimes called "red" rice?
Sheryl
No, the sort of multidisciplinary approach you describe is not available here. Thai medical care is extremely specialized. I would nto assume that new onset of acne is Thailand is related to either your immune system or your gut...many people develop this due to clogged sweat pores due to the humidity. air pollution can also be a factor. If you want a specialist in autoimmune issues I suggest https://www.bumrungrad.com/doctors/Hiroshi-Chantaphakul For skin canser screening, the only doc I really reocmmend for this is in Pattaya - skin cancer is very, very rare in Thais. Dr. Anna trained and worked in the US for many years and is quite thorough, worth traveling to see her https://www.bangkokpattayahospital.com/en/doctor-profile?v_id=7&depid=

The more processed rice seems to cause less problems.

I've lived in many other areas with similar environment and performed considerable elimination trials...while I certainly need the advice of a medical professional, the evidence very much points to dietary issues/autoimmune issues. I'll get something scheduled with the docs recommended! DO

Exactly what I'm doing now. However, I'd still like to chat with a doc.
