Thai Drivers License

Featured Replies

I apologize in advanced to those tired of people with silly questions..

Might be the wrong forum to ask as well?

I've done some research on obtaining a Thai Drivers license, but since I live in KampangePhet, it seems to be an easier, but confusing process as well.

My son's mother applied for her drivers license last year, here at KamphangePhet and had asked what I needed to do to get one as well.

Well, same as a question I asked the local immigration about a different subject, the person working points out at the window and says I need to go to Bangkok.

The U.S. Embassy website, from how I read it, there is no need to get any form from them, based on where I live at.

So other than a O-A visa, a valid state drivers license and a medical exam, it seems everything else is done at the drivers license place? (I forgot the actual name of it).

Is there something I'm missing?

You need a residency certificate no matter what the US Embassy claims - you can get it from Immigration or your embassy, immigration is easier. You only don't require this if you have a work permit.

Place is called the Department of Land Transport, or DLT for short.

You can go to the US Embassy in Bangkok or the Consulate in Chiang Mai and obtain a "certificate of residence" for $50 or you can go to the Immigration Office where you do your 90 day report and pay between 0 to 300 THB and they will give you a "residency certificate" that you can take to DLT and obtain your Thai Drivers license

Each Immigration office has their own rules for issuing the certificate, so check first, but most just require you to have a non tourist visa (which you appear to have),  and a proof of address that can be satisfied with a lease or utility bill in your name

a medical exam

You really don't need an examination, just a Medical Certificate from a local doctors office or clinic, which really only states that the doctor thinks that your are alive and in control of your faculties.  Usually cost 100 THB

1. Passport + Copy of homepage + Copy of Visa/Extension.
2. Existing foreign Licence + Copy.
3. IDP (if applicable) + Copy
4. Health Certificate.
5. Proof of Address – Certificate of Residence OR Tabien Baan + Copy.
6. The Fee.

These are the documents required at my local DLT to obtain a Thai Driving Licence.

You will have to take 4 preliminary tests, distance awareness, reaction time, colour blindness and peripheral vision.

Health certificates can be obtained from local Clinics, 40 baht upwards.

If you don't have a Tabien Baan (Yellow House book) then a 'Certificate of Residence' can be obtained sometimes from your local Police Station, your Amphur office, Immigration office, or your Embassy.

I did DL renewal a month ago at Phuket Land Transport and needed residence paper from Immigration (free), my old DL, took reaction test (a real joke) and watched driver rule video. A new DL would have required road test which is actually quite meticulous.

"A new DL would have required road test..."

Only if you do not have a licence from your own country.
