Mum kills her own daughter as she prepares to take Thai driving test

Tragedy struck at a driving test center yesterday when a mother pressed the wrong pedal killing her four year old daughter and injuring her seven year old son.

Napheu, 36, - a Muser hill tribeswoman who has gained Thai nationality - had gone to the Singburi Department of Land Transport with her four children and two friends.

She had just parked in the parking lot normally.

The children were waiting on the footpath in front of the office when she tried to reverse her car. But she had left it in gear and put her foot down on the accelerator and mounted the footpath.

Four year old Armoey was crushed under the front wheel. She was taken to hospital by foundation medics but died there.

Seven year old Somwang was hit but survived and is improving in hospital.

Her two other children managed to get out of the way.

When Meuang Singburi police arrived they found the mother distraught. She did not yet know that her daughter was dead.

She was arrested and taken in for further questioning.

A security guard confirmed that he had seen the children waiting under a tree when the car suddenly mounted the footpath and hit two of them.

That is truly tragic. I was a little dismayed to read she was subsequently arrested. This is quite clearly an accident, and I fail to see how possible criminal charges would be appropriate. RIP y

RIP young lady. So sad to die on a day that started full of excitement.

She had just parked in the parking lot normally. Oh god, they're all around us. RIP Noo.

It happens too often, not saying that her gender had something to do with it.

She should have just paid the 1000 baht and went straight to the "safety" video.
Out in one hour with a licence to kill.

So she drove to the driving test parking lot and then parked, meaning she did not have a driver license yet?

Yesterday at the DLT (Taking the motorcycle tests), I noticed a number of Thai's failing the reaction test... (i.e. press the accelerator on the green light, when the light turns to red hit the brake pedal within an allotted time frame).

Of a group of approximately 20 I saw 4 not hit the brake in time, the lady supervising the tests was under pressure, it was extremely busy at the DLT - She signed their papers regardless.

This and juvenile and idiotic nature of the videos at the test centre, the poor testing standards, near absence of driving schools and a 'proper test' can readily explain why the roads are as dangerous as they are.

This is a heart breaking and tragic story, along with so many others which could be avoided given adequate training.

Killing your own child and be on the news channel called “Sanook”
Mei Sanook!

Very sad,do they not have an instructor in the car, that may have prevented this, whole system needs reform.

Unless I am reading it wrong, why is she driving and parking the car when she is about to take her own driving test? Or was she already doing the test?

More than 50% of Thai's about to take their driving license arrive to the test station driving their own car/motorbike.

Sadly this time the lack of law enforcement cost a young child her life.....

I rode to the DLT to obtain my Thai Motorcycle Licence...   Thus, on the way there I was riding *illegally, on the return journey I was fully Licensed to ride my Motorcycle in Thailand.

[*with a UK Licence which included Motorcycle Classification]

Having a Driving Licence does not automatically make someone a better driver. However, in a country where the test are much more stringent (i.e. Western Countries) having passed the test ensures that drivers are of a minimum and safe standard to drive.

Thailand does not yet have this minimum standard, the driving licence is merely a bureaucratic process and nothing more - Tragically, people die as a direct result of this.

Agree with all of it.

No comments thus far on whether the vehicle had manual or auto transmission.

Assuming manual and that she left it in gear then the car would have lurched forward as soon as the start key was turned.

If auto, the car should not have started unless the selector was in Park or Neutral.

A tragic outcome but needs clarification.

That's actually the only way that "makes sense". Maybe together with pushing the gas pedal instead of the clutch ;)

Why should she not be arrested? Because she "just" killed her own child while driving a car without a driving license? Obviously she should be prosecuted for negligent driving resulting in death and driving without driving license

Very sad but my opinion Thai people can't drive and will probably never learn it

But she driving to the driving test center????

Meaby it is bad to say but she kill her baby that's I call murder

You should look up the definition of murder

The woman was letting the kids out to remain under the tree whilst she was going to do her driving test side of it

& in doing so left the Auto geared car in drive with brake depressed & then went to reverse forgetting that she was still in drive

If you leave the car in "drive" and don't press the brake, the car will slowly move forwards, so she would have noticed it

I was in a car with a teacher in Ayuthaya who had recently learned to drive. She parked the car on a slope, turned off the ignition but forgot to put on the handbrake. The car rolled back a good metre heading towards another parked car behind. I grabbed the handbrake and put it on, stopping the car rolling. She got very angry with me for touching the handbrake. I said the car was rolling backwards. She swore it wasn't. It is amazing what people don't notice when they don't want to.

Heartbreaking , yes. But also shows people taking the test not knowing what pedal is what !

Indeed - Just watching some attempt the 'reaction test' is highly concerning.....

.... Its difficult for this Thread not to turn into a general Thai bash, however, when compared to 'other nations' there is a disproportionate number of 'incapable' drivers as well as downright dangerous drivers.

Ok I'l rephrase that

"With the foot brake applied "

Poor driving habits , and actions, have consequences sooner or later. It is a pity a poor innocent little one had to be on the receiving end.

Imagine letting out 4 children and adults from you car and still having it in gear, not to mention driving illegally.
