Boris Johnson jokes about British sex tourism in Thailand during major Brexit speech

'As I have just discovered we have more than a million who go to Thailand every year, where according to our superb consular services they get up to the most eye-popping things'

Boris Johnson appeared to joke about sex tourism in Thailand during a major speech about Brexit.

In an address in which Foreign Secretary outlined his vision for the country’s departure from the EU, he also quipped “the right deal on aviation and on visa-free travel” would allow Britons “ever more intensively to go on cheapo flights to stag parties in ancient cities”.

Mr Johnson said: ”As I have just discovered we have more than a million who go to Thailand every year, where according to our superb consular services they get up to the most eye-popping things.

This is not the understanding of the Junta's road map he was meant to refer to.

If you are British don't take it too badly. Every country in the world has at least one stand-out political buffoon. Even Thailand is no exception the this rule.

Lol. This is gonna create a storm of reactions from the Thais.

What an idiot!

Good thing he doesn't have a key job in government or was the leader of a major campaign regarding Britain's future, eh?

That could be awful...

He is far from an idiot.

He managed to be elected as Mayor of London twice in succession, as a Tory, when Labour was in power nationally and he had somewhat lukewarm support from his own party establishment. They shouted "Boris you Tory w****r" after him as he cycled around London, and went and voted for him!

He is also an accomplished journalist (editor of the Spectator) and author of some very well written and entertaining books and television programs, on varied political and cultural issues. His TV series on Ancient Rome and its influence on Europe was very good.

He cultivates the mop headed buffoon look. His flowery language -"get up to some eye popping things", is very much part of that persona.

He is probably the most competent, and from the lefts point of view most dangerous Tory politician of his generation. Just look at the hatred he inspires from the left leaning press in the UK.

He is also surprisingly liberal (note small "l") in many of his policies.

He is no paragon, but he is no idiot.

I like him, if not all his policies.

Agreed, he also knew exactly what he was saying.

I got the impression in his speech about "the eye-popping things", he was referring to the crack in the middle - of the road map, of course.

A perfectly harmless old school joke, based on facts.  Besides, embassy workers, aid workers. and NGO's are among the worst offenders when in comes to the sexual exploitation of third world girls and women.

He is the absolute epitome of a man who is clearly intelligently smart, yet has the personality and the social skills of a goldfish.

It was said that England has the best sewage system in the world, yet some of their
shits end up in Thailand/pattaya....

Sounds perfect then!

This is Boris on his best behavior

If that's all he's said Thailand, particularly Prayuth's 5th columnists, should consider itself very lucky

Are you surprised that Boris is not so popular with Pattaya sexpat crowd?

I wouldn't disagree about old school jokes, however, harmless they're not perceived to be in this politically-correct era - sadly. It gives the press a field day.

As to the worst offenders for sexual exploitation, closer to home in Cambodia it was the United Nations group running UNTAC a couple of decades ago, who facilitated the establishment of K11 just outside of Phnom Penh city centre.

Totally agree with contributors to forum who are supporting Boris.  He may well have said whatever, however I always double check what that epitome of left wing thought- The Independent - fills it's paper with.

I am eagerly anticipating the departure of Mr May when Boris, Michael Gove and Jacob Reece  Mogg can takeover the running of the country

555. i knew he would come out with something. was a bit disappointed that he didn't come out with something like that whilst he was here. but like a true professional he kept tight lipped, until he was out of the country. Johnson you fking legend

Unfortunately, people like Boris are a byproduct of the social justice warriors and the oversensitive PC brigades. Many people got sick and tired of being told what they could or couldn't say, and people like Donald Trump exploited that.

Most people are visceral in their reactions. If you've got very few morals, just spout out idiotic rhetoric that plays to your audience. They'll love you for it.

That it was a major speech about Brexit yet Boris has got everyone talking about sex tourism is a masterstroke of political slight of hand.

Telling it the way it is ... how many politicians do that nowadays?

Well I suppose we are looking at it and commenting on it through the prism of living in Thailand. I doubt many elsewhere will see it as anything than a passing reference to where he was the day before.
