Florida victim's mom screams - 'Trump stop guns getting into children's hands'

(Reuters) - The anguished mother of a girl slain with 16 other people by a gunman at a Florida high school took to national television on Thursday to angrily demand that U.S. President Donald Trump "do something" to protect school children from gun violence.

"President Trump, you say what can you do? ... You can do a lot," Lori Alhadeff shouted into the camera in an emotionally raw appearance on CNN. Fighting tears, her voice quaking with anger, she screamed, "Do something. Action. We need it now. These kids need safety now."

The mother said she had just spent two hours making funeral arrangements for her 14-year-old daughter Alyssa Alhadeff, who was one of 17 people shot dead on Thursday at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, a suburb of Miami.

"How do we allow a gunman to come into our children’s school? How did they get through security? What security is there?" she cried.

"The gunman, the crazy person, just walks right into the school, knocks down the window to my child’s door and starts shooting, shooting her ..."

A 19-year-old former student of the school, Nikolas Cruz, has been accused of the murders.

The mother's impassioned remarks left CNN's anchor, Brooke Baldwin, who was broadcasting outside the school the day after the shooting, momentarily speechless as she choked back tears.

Earlier on Thursday Trump addressed the shooting in a White House speech that emphasized school safety and mental health but made no mention of gun policy.

"President trump, you say what can you do? You can stop the guns from getting into these children's hands. Put metal detectors at every entrance to the schools," Alhadeff screamed. "President Trump, please do something."

Alhadeff's comments spoke to growing frustration in the United States on the part of parents because of the lack of action by policymakers in Washington regarding gun control, especially regarding assault rifles. An AR-15 style rifle was used in Wednesday's shooting.

Including yesterday's massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, there have been 18 school shootings since Jan. 1 this year.

This is nothing  to do with Trump.

If America wants no more school shootings, get the nutters in facilities that deal with insanity.

Maybe a well regulated Militia with the right to bear arms could help.

Jeez, and these people have the bomb

Maybe, for their own protection, they should amend the constitution to give them the right to carry arms and not make them so difficult to get hold of

As nothing changed after Sandy Hook, nothing will change after Parkland.

The world looks on and wonders what went wrong with America and why has the "can do" nation become impotent to do ANYTHING  ...

While i cannot even imagine what this woman is going through ,why have a go at Trump ,might as well have a go at Obhama ,or any of the previous presidents , its not up to him to ban guns ,he does not have the power .

President Obama repeatedly tried to get the ball rolling on gun control but every time he was blocked by the same people who elected the sack of pus currently in the WH:bah:

And how can he stop that? It´s ultimately going to be the parents job to raise their children.
Teach them about right and wrong. If the child has any mental defects, it will also be the parents job to seek help before something like this happens.

For once, Mr Trump is actually innocent. Yeah, you know, I don´t like to say that but this time it´s true.

All the talk about a ban on guns??? Has nothing to do with it! Selling cocaine is illegal, but it´s done. Guns will always be on the streets for a handful of Mr Green. It´s still going to be the parents ultimete responsibility to see to that this do not happen again. You know, the moronic ones that sits clicking on Facebook everyday, and don´t know shit about what their children are doing.

Take out the 2nd amendment......people should not have the right to bear arms!

This was written into the US constitution in 1791...227 years ago. Why does it apply in 2018?

  • Popular Post

The pro gun lobby keep quoting the 2nd ammendment, the right to bear arms. That was written way back in the 1700's when everyone was involved in a fight for something. That situation no longer exists in the USA so amend the constitution so that not everyone has the right to bear arms any longer. You have a military that now fulfills that roll. The USA is the laughing stock of the rest of the developed world where countries like Australia, New Zealand the UK all have very strict gun control and the results of this are very obvious when put beside the USA's antiquated law.

Deal with an outdated Second Amendment first. This has always been the root cause of the many massacres and it does have something to do with Trump. Is he also iñdebted to the NRA as so many others are?

The headline does not tie-up with the bereaved mother's comments as far as I can see.

She is asking for more security in schools - to stop guns entering schools?

Edit -

"How do we allow a gunman to come into our children’s school? How did they get through security? What security is there?" she cried.

"The gunman, the crazy person, just walks right into the school, knocks down the window to my child’s door and starts shooting, shooting her ..."

It has everything to do with, no other country in the world has the amount of gun problems.

The gun lovers keep telling other nonsense in order to keep your guns. It is quite pathetic.

Sorry, that "well regulated" thing not really on the agenda for the "2ndrs".

Neither is the object of the 2nd for that matter.

Good old  US of A,,,,, they are so stupid & stubborn  that they just cannot see it.

Watched the interviews made on site yesterday & none of the officials are even prepared to talk

about real gun control.

No civilian needs nor should they have access to semi automatic weapons FULL STOP

The average citizen needs to rise up & demand the 2nd amendment be changed to accommodate.

All they talk about is "mental health", which will always be like "closing the door after the horse has bolted.

Will anything happen, ? NO

as the gun lobby is too strong & gun manufacturers support the political parties.

You can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make it drink

In a DUI, we blame the driver... In a bombing, we blame the bomber... In a shooting, we blame the gun?

Now just take a look at all the people who have died here in Thailand in a car, truck, van, or bus.

Do we need to put a ban on all of them?

Trouble with actually repealing the 2nd is that, given the politicisation of the dispute, it could well lead to another civil war.

Just like Slavery did.

Still, sometimes "a mans gotta do whadda mans gotta do":

"He hath loosed the fateful lightning of His terrible swift sword"

It’s amazing how everything positive is all about la trump and his presidency, yet all negativity is nothing to do with him.

Even things such as gun legislation, something you’d think the govt could legislate over.

Strange days indeed.

Since you posted exactly the same in another thread allow me to post exactly the same reply:

"Drivers have to undergo fairly rigorous training and certification to be allowed ownership of a car. Bombs are illegal for everyone but the armed forces to possess.

Not so with guns as they're readily available with , at best, a cursory background check. That also includes the ownership of semi-automatic assault rifles, which even the craziest gun nut cannot claim is really necessary in the defense against crazed badgers or fierce raccoons."

Surely 'mental health' (i.e. no history of aggressive behaviour) is v important?

But the mother is absolutely right - gun ownership is out of control and sadly, there needs to be more security in schools to prevent the odd nutter entering.

The headline is v misleading, as she was calling for more security to prevent this type of attack - not 'trump to stop guns getting into childrens hands'.....

Let´s play in virtuality. If there is a crazy country, with a lot of morinic people that is led by a business man with no qualifications for his work at the same time as that particular business man said he do not want to get paid for his work as the countrys leader. Can´t come much good out of that. On the other hand, I am quite sure that a country like that do not exist in reality, right?

The only time I ever saw a real gun when I was young (in England) was when a temporary pupil at our junior-high school brought one in to show off. He was American.

No such thing as a "junior-high" in England.

The only time I've seen a gun was whilst on holiday in the US, staying with 'friends'.  The husband was v proud of his gun, and my husband was fascinated ....

Even worse, they held a party - and I was completely taken aback at the way the women stayed indoors, talking about their children - whilst the men were outside talking about guns.....

But this is detracting from the obvious point that the headline is extremely misleading.......
