ubonjoe
The requirement is 40k baht income or 40Ok baht in Thai bank for 2 months. I think there was misunderstanding about the 400k baht requirement being the only option. Is the income letter you presented less than 6 months old? You could apply for a 60 day extension to visit your wife to get more time. You could easily get a single entry non-o visa based upon marriage at the embassy in Vientiane.

Just go to Suvannakhet, Laos and get a Multi entry Marriage VISA, 5000bht no other proof of funds required. Lasts 1 year, 90 day border jumps, you can stay in Thailand 15 months. What you have from Chiang Mai is a marriage VISA EXTENSION.

Lite Beer
If you want a Multi Entry Non Imm O Visa you will have to go to Savanakhet. With this Visa you will have to leave the country every 90 days. You will be better off applying for a 12 month extension of stay at Udon Immigration. You would then have to report to them every 90 days. 400,000 in the bank or 40,000 monthly income. Prove with letter from your Embassy. Whatever you think they told you. You can get a single entry non-o visa visa in Vientiane. You will need your marriage certificate plus a copy, copies of your wife's house book registry and ID card signed by her. Copy of your passport photo page and Lao visa/entry page. Note that you will be going to the embassy's consular section not the embassy.

JackThompson
Be sure your income-letter is not more than 6 months old for the immigration office extension - as they will reject because of that. If you had a new income-letter, that could indicate this office is not playing by the "official" rules, or the person you spoke to was ill-informed. If your income-letter is correct and recent, but your immigration office will not play by the "official" rules, and you plan to be in that area for awhile, the multiple-entry visa from Savannakhet is the way to go. The single-entry from Vientiane is only useful for 90-days one time. This is best if you will be going to an immigration-office that will accept your income letter before that time ends. The only office you can count on to do things "by the real rules" every time for everything is Bangkok's Chang Wattana - but you need to "appear" to live in their service area to use them.
