‘Songkran Festival’ extended to five-day holiday

The Cabinet on Tuesday gave the green light for the five-day "Songkran Festival" holiday from April 12 to 16.

 

To accommodate people travelling up-country to visit their hometowns, and to stimulate nationwide tourism, the Cabinet allowed Thursday, April 12, as an additional holiday on top of the festival time from April 13 to 16.

 

As traffic congestion is expected during the long holiday period, Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha also instructed state officials to prepare measures to improve road safety and public order.

Getting a head start for another 7 day carnage on the highways.

Meaning same same, maybe 10 less deaths give or take either ways, or 61 additional deaths, given the extra public holiday, "step right up, place your bets"

Great idea, many families only go back to their home villages twice a year, this gives them more time to spend with the family and kids.

Must be hard on some parents having to leave their kids with the grandparents and go work in BKK.

Oh God. Now all our regular whiners will start their yearly ranting about the water throwing 'madness', road death 'carnage', thailand 3rd world, end of tourism, economic collapse blah blah while the thais will spend, eat, smile and enjoy one more long Songkran holiday.

My idea.

Make it as many days as you want.

Just make it

only one day of the water throwing and enforce it.

If I recall correctly, statistics have shown that New Years / Songkran traffic fatalities are only slightly higher than the 50-60 annual deaths/day average, ie. ~70 deaths/day.

Mainly due to the drives being stuck in traffic jams everywhere hard to get up to the speed they really want to drive at.

Surely that should be "exit tourism" as masses flee to other countries to escape the mayhem?

Hmmmm. I doubt the families of the hundreds that will die and the thousands injured will be celebrating.

 

Personally, I enjoyed Songkran in Pattaya till they started putting ice in the water. 

An added day will boost the economy for sure as Mr. and Mrs. Somchai will have to spend more money for alcohol.  As for tourism, yeah right, when pigs fly. More and more it is becoming the norm for ex pats to get out of dodge during this assine holiday.  One more day for the road carnage to build up to a new record high.  Congratulation once again to the stupidity of the Thai powers that be.

Many Thais complain too, you know. Those who spend a lot of time at the temples complain about those that are less considerate. As for me, even in my native country I didn't like going on long journeys at national holiday time due to traffic jams galore, Ha!

I'd leave too as am due in the UK about then, but the cost of flights decreases drastically after April 17, so I'll keep my head down and grin and bear it

5 days, compared to the 2 weeks that a good many drag it out to.

An even bigger waste of water, maybe this is why we had a prediction of water shortages later in the year.

And to make new babies which will be abandoned as usual and educated by uneducated grand parents. It's a never ending cycle 

This  will improve the road  kill on those  days as i think it usually goes  down on holidays compared to a "normal"  day

Know what you mean as whilst most of us stay at home/walk or get a taxi to the festivities during the water-throwing days - I feel very sorry for those Thais that still have to ride a 'bike to get to work, as mostly only banks/govt. employees enjoy these 'bank holidays'.
