Win10 on PC, restore needed but old restore points gone

So again for the 2nd time I have lost the option of right clicking and create a new folder which is very frustrating on my fairly new Win10 PC.

Last time this happened, I restored the PC to an earlier point and I got the option back to right click and create a new folder.

Now this time my restore points is nowhere to be found and I can only restore to yesterday at which point right clicking and create a new folder didn't work.

System protection is on, so I don't understand my restore points are gone.

Two questions to our specialists here on the forum;

1: Why does this happen? I can see in the microsoft support that this happens to many.

2: What should I do; reset the PC?

I rather not reset, never done it before and I used Win7 for a long time on my old PC and that was never necessary and even upgraded to Win10 and it still ran OK.

I run the free CC cleaner program regularly as I did on my old PC and read on-line that it's a good program.

Any inputs welcome, thanks

I'm running Win10 Pro.

Sometimes when right clicking on Desktop to open New Folder I get the spinning circle for quite a while before the menu option to create a New Folder appears. This usually only happens after a shutdown or reboot. I've tried to search for a solution but seems I'm the only one with this perticular problem

As for using System Restore it has never worked for me, my system has no problem creating Restore Points but getting it to Restore to an earlied date is a different story. As you say many seem to be having the same problem but there seems to be no real answer. Some suggested using safe mode but Iv'e not tried that yet.

Sorry not much help but take comfort in the knowledge that you are not alone .

I recently tried a Restore on my two-month old Win10 Lenovo (problems opening websites because of alleged "low memory")

Told that the Restore didn't complete successfully and System returned back to previous state.

I didn't try again since.

As this has happened to you before, are you sure it isn't a problem with your mouse, mouse drivers or mouse settings?

Just out of the box, I haven't read the threads where this has happened to others but do understand it does happen.

This message will not help your present situation, OP, but it might help in the future.

Do backups of your system drive with a good, reliable backup program: my current fave for Win 10 is Macrium Reflect, you can download it for free.  After you do a backup, verify it and/or attempt to mount it and access it, then save a copy to another disk/USB drive.  This last part is important -- nothing more disappointing than needing to do a restore and finding out the backup you were depending on is corrupt.

I used to work on a backup product that was faulty and unreliable, and the people running the company weren't very interested in correcting this.  I was ashamed to tell people where I worked.  The rationale was that not all customers had problems with the software, and that the competitors' products were just as bad.

The absolute trash in most backup products was (is?) incremental backups and the backing up of only "system settings": but hey, if you play around with it for a few days you might get a an acceptable result!  (that was sarcasm)

I use Win 10, but I have no faith in it's system restore because I don't really understand the extent of it, and I'm not particularly interested in studying up on it (hey, I'm retired!).  I'll stick to full backups every week or so, thank you very much.  Great to know that no matter how much of a mess I make of my system disk I can have it back to a stable state in 20 minutes.

1. It seems to be a MS related problem and almost every bigger update switched my System Restore off. It became pretty much useless and i could never restore a W 10 pro image before. Even when I'd created an image, in case of a malfunction the System Restore never worked out.

 2. CC Cleaner isn't the best tool to keep your PC clean and it's in no way an Anti virus program. Have you tried another mouse, if that's the only problem you've got?

If the mouse is working, please do an update of your mouse software. You also have to make sure that the tablet mode isn't on, please click Window and A and make sure it's switched off.

If you really want to be on the safe side and you can't get your system working, reset the PC and start over again. Once you've finished all setups and the system is working well, do a back up with Macrium, but also create a bootable drive, best is to use a memory stick, USB drive.

If you've  got your system backed up, it only takes around 40 minutes ro restore your system from a backup.

OP,

Are you sure this isn't a right-click 'current context' menu option issue?

Meaning, right-click options change depending on what application or application function/area you're currently in.

For instance, the option NEW > FOLDER is available in FILE EXPLORER when I right-click near (but not on) an item in the folder.  And the option in FILE EXPLORER for New Folder should be available in the menu ribbon and via Ctrl-Shift-N key combination.

Probably an nVidia GeForce graphics driver issue (something in the nVidia app is crashing causing other menu options to disappear). Though it could be any app that inserts options into the right-click context menus.

Suggest opening CMD in elevated mode - by pressing WindowsKey+X -> Command Prompt (Admin)

SFC /SCANNOW

This will scans integrity of all protected system files and repairs files with problems when possible.

While a reboot usually will clear the error (sometimes only temporary if the app responsible has issues), you may also want to visit your graphics board or graphics chip maker's website and see if there are any recent updates to the driver suite you can download and install.

Fix here w/ download .reg file: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/8012-add-remove-new-context-menu-windows-10-a.html

Suggest in future use tweaking.com's registry backup tool. Can schedule. I did use ERUNT but it's now obsolete; this is the bee's knees now:

As RichCor has already pointed out, The standard approaches:
1. Does this work in Safe Mode?
If it does, Windows isn't broken and you have sthg installed which conflicts with explorer.

2. Resolving conflicts with explorer in normal mode.
a. Clean boot:
Clean Boot - Perform in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts - Windows 10 Forums
b. Use Shellexview (freeware) to disable shell extensions.
Download, install, run; hide all MS extensions. Disable all others.
If Win 10 = 64bit also check the 32 bit option in ShellexView.

No need to log off.

Retest.

3. Repairing Windows (1st method)
Press Windows key + X; Click command prompt (admin).
Type
SFC /Scannow

Wait for this to complete and post the result.
Retest create new folder if the result is clear or only report opencl.dll

OP< please check if AVAST is the culprit.

Many thanks guys, some things to try out.

I am running out of time as I soon go off-shore working for 2 month in Africa but I will try as you suggested when home again.

Many thanks again and I promise I will follow up in this topic when I have the chance.

  • 2 months later...

Hi guys,

Just got back from work yesterday and today I updated Win10 (1803) and now I can create a folder again, the "new box" option is back.

I am now looking for a good back-up/mirror software, will check my options later, what's something that simple/free to use.

Cheers to all for inputs.
