Protesters put on “Yuth-nocchio” masks at Saturday protest

BANGKOK — A junta spokesman on Thursday urged pro-democracy activists to stop mocking regime leader Prayuth Chan-ocha with their Pinocchio masks.

Maj. Gen. Piyapong Klinpan, who also commands a special prison where government opponents are routinely detained, said the junta leader is a person deserving respect, or puu yai, who should not be lampooned with such caricatures.

Well said Major General .... however I don't think Khun Prayut is too worried about these comics ....  :wai:

Can’t even tell them himself. Like a child, “please stop mocking me for my bad habits”. At least a child has the ability to learn and change.

This is politics, old boy. Don’t like it then leave.

Deserves respect!!!! Has he heard Prayut's bloody songs?

Pinocchio protest draws warning from junta

By The Nation

A protester wears a paper “Yutnocchio” mask, a likeness of Prime Minister Prayut with an elongated Pinocchio nose, during a February 24 rally at Thammasat University Tha Prachan.

The junta has threatened to take action against pro-election protesters who last Saturday mocked Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha by depicting him as Pinocchio.

Young activists from Democracy Restoration and Start Up People demanded that an election be held this year during a demonstration at Thammasat University’s Tha Prachan campus.

Several wore paper masks dubbed “Yutnocchio” – a likeness of Prayut with an elongated nose evoking Pinocchio, the fictional boy-puppet whose nose grew in length every time he lied.

The demonstrators were mocking Prayut as unreliable, having failed to keep his promise of an election in November this year.

National Council for Peace and Order spokesman Piyapong Klinpan on Thursday said it was inappropriate to “ridicule the leader because he is a phu yai [senior figure] of the country”.

“They should quit imagining things,” Piyapong said, warning that the junta would take action that would “gradually” move from soft to severe.

He said Thammasat University should consider the protest’s suitability and noted that the junta has been keeping a close eye on the movement.

The group plans another rally on March 10, though the location has not yet been announced.

No respect for previous PM's so why this one lol. He not looking so smirky and content when the protests about him :-)

He looking a prize clown and has no talent or personality to deal with it and it going escalate over next year as you can be pretty sure elections be delayed further and his nose going grow longer lol .

Quite right, Steven. Khun Prayut is too busy choosing another silk jacket or accepting one from a grateful populace to worry about such trifles

Nicely constructed second par in this Khaosod report

Maybe, at the end, the Blue Fairy will turn him into a real democratically elected Prime Minister.

“They should quit imagining things,” Piyapong said, warning that the junta would take action that would “gradually” move from soft to severe.

Perhaps that is what the protesters want. It would draw more international attention and condemnation to the beleaguered government. Either way this is not the way to respond to it.

I agree with the Junta-there's no comparison. Pinnochio came through in the end! :sorry:

Ghepetto would be proud

In addition to mocking the PM the masks also serve to make facial recognition SW and identifying protesters for subsequent "Attitude Adjustment" much more challenging.

Honestly, respect is earned, not simply granted based on some birth-right or a brutal climb to the top of the Army heap.

In Thailand, respect is demanded by those not deserving of it.

If it is not given by those deemed 'inferior' and of a lower 'status' then threats, followed by intimidation and ultimately violence ensue.

This is the way it works here, as it worked 1000 years ago in the dark ages in Europe.

It didn't work for General Suchinda back in 1992 and I doubt it will work now, ultimately. But at what cost is the question.

What an insult to an important figure of our childhood. Pinocchio, go for it.

This is worrying. They may start arresting anyone with a big nose.

Right on brother! Their behavior is abhorrent. Those comics who foolishly malign and disrespect Uncle need to ask themselves some very serious questions.

Does his majestic presence not bless his nieces and nephews with serene beauty and blissful contentment?

Does his compassionate and benevolent gaze not glow with the luminous light of supreme understanding and infinite wisdom?

Do his profound words not ring with the sweet purity of godly truth and fall musically on our grateful ears?

Behold, ye of little faith. Behold perfection incarnate and bow with humility and deep, everlasting respect.

Surely you jest Steven. He would be absolutely livid knowing these photos made it to the international newspapers

How do you think he felt when he read this insultive headline in Reuters

Thai activists in Pinocchio masks call junta leader 'liar'

Do you imagine he laughed along with the rest of the world. I don't think so. The word is now out around the diplomatic circles that Prayut is regarded by his people as a liar. There is sure to be some sniggering behind ambassadorial hands. But one thing you can be sure; nothing can ever dent his enormous ego.

Well if he can't take the heat he should get out of the kitchen.

This is what democracy looks like Mr P. If you cannot accept it, get out of the game.

Did you miss the line: Maj. Gen. Piyapong Klinpan, who also commands a special prison where government opponents are routinely detained.

Or do you just ignore the fact of grave contempt of human rights and rest assured this won't ever happen to you?

Surely you jest Steven. He would be absolutely livid knowing these photos made it to the international newspapers
