Prawit orders agencies to cooperate to reduce Songkran death toll

A campaign to reduce the road-death toll during the Songkran holidays will be rolled out as relevant government agencies join forces under the instructions of Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan.

 

The Interior Ministry has been told to cooperate with other agencies to find and implement measures to reduce road accidents during the period, said ministry spokesman Kongcheep Tantravanich.

 

The Cabinet on Tuesday gave the green light for the five-day “Songkran Festival” holiday from April 12 to 16.

 

To accommodate people travelling up-country to visit their hometowns, and to stimulate nationwide tourism, the Cabinet designated Thursday, April 12 as an additional holiday on top of the April 13 to 16 usual holiday time.

 

Prawit told the agencies to learn from past statistics to identify accident causes and try to minimise them, said Kongcheep.

 

He said the authorities would also launch awareness campaigns about drunk driving, use of safety belts and wearing helmets.

 

Manu Thais travel to see family and friend during the long Songkran holidays as they celebrate the traditional Thai New Year and enjoy the water-splashing festival.

 

There were 3,690 road accidents during the April 11 to 17 Songkran period last year, killing 390 people and injuring 3,808 others.

 

The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department said the death toll was down 11.76 per cent from 2016.

How can that be possible? Now Thai people you be good folk, drive slower, respect other road users, no drink driving, hell will freeze over before any of that will happen.

This seems to follow the normal pattern. Committees will be formed to discuss the issue, 4/5 star venues will be booked, buffet lunches and flowers ordered, wives, mia nois and b/fs put on notice to attend. Participants will be seated around a huge U shaped conference table and each will have a microphone. After a few days flapping the gums they will announce a 5-5-5 Songkran road safety programme. 5 days before, 5 days during and 5 days after.

After all the 7-7-7 theory worked well over the Christmas and new year break didn't it?

I can't wait for the usual press releases such as - Please refrain from drinking alcohol before driving, Extra police will be on the roads, No passengers in the back of pick up trucks etc etc etc

1,5 months to go and already the government is ordering agencies to cooperate!

 

...in the end, there will be no beer sold at Silom and young ladies will be told to dress and behave appropriately (or else!), but apart from that, police will NOT do their job, people will drive plastered and without helmets and so on and so forth....

why does Songkran have to be 4 days of drunken stupidity and then a long weekend? Why can't it be one day like ever other new year's celebratory day off? Nothing will change this year. Maybe more will die than last year, seems to be the going trend.

The only way that they will have fewer traffic deaths during their big holidays are if the whole country runs out of fuel, the traffic is just getting worse here in my opinion.
