This is probably a dumb question but I am new to cell phones plus I never have used Uber.

Does my fone need an internet connection to request an Uber ride?  I am using a SIM card from DTAC.

 

Also are there any problems in paying with cash to the Uber driver in Bangkok

Yes the app works through the internet so you need an internet connection. The data needs to be switched on your phone.

Order one with wfi on then for the rest of it your phone does not need an internet connection

The only way to pay with cash is to cancel your ride when you make contact with the driver and then arrange a cash job, you will have to pay a cancellation fee if its over a certain amount of time. You will need your uber account set up with a card (any) to actually request a ride in the 1st place

You can pay by cash direct to the driver, we were in Chiang Mai last and used Uber all the time paying cash to the driver.
