Cutting a piece of 1 mm thick sheet metal by hand

Featured Replies

Hi,

Is it possible to make a straight/clean cut on a piece of 1mm thick sheet metal with a pair of good quality hand snippers?
If so, who sells good quality hand snippers in Chiang Rai?

Thank you very much...

What metal are you intending to cut?

Tin snips are intended for just that, cutting tin-plate. You may just be able to cut 1mm aluminium but steel (mild or stainless) is a different proposition. At this thickness you are going to get considerable distortion of your workpiece.

Find a small machine / sheet metal shop with a decent guillotine and get them to cut to size for you, cost will be minimal.

Moving to DIY.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

Sorry answered my own question.  Yes a sheet metal workshop.

How big is said piece? Getting it straight is the key. If not too large then get it made in BKK and have it put on the bus or...

If you are handy then an angle grinder or a dremel. Even a cheap table saw with a cutting disc in? But if you want something desktop sized with perfectly straight and true edges then a guillotine is the way to go. Question is, is there one in/near Chiang Mai?

If there is a decent tool shop up there they might have a hand shear? If you want to have a go by hand.

Or even a nibbler? Up to 1.6-1.8mm  The drill powered one is only 35 quid.
