Help with first visa

Featured Replies

Hi everyone my first post so if in wrong place I apologise

i am English man 56 making the move to thailand with my thai wife of 20 years will be staying at our home in si rattana

I will get my 3 month visa in england then convert to 1 year visa based on marriage

my question is do i need to get my first visa 1 year visa based on marriage in thailand or can i get my first visa from savannakhet laos as only a few hours dive away

thank you for any advice on this mater

When you do your 3 month visa in England. Then you can do the 1 year extension in Thailand.

You can go to Immigration in Thailand after 2 months (1 month before expire) for the extension.

There are some requirements with the money and other stuff which have been answered already many times.

So you not need to go to Laos for a new Visa, but of course you could go there for a VISA. Some members here prefer the VISA over the extension.

My Opinion:

Advantage Extension: you can stay in the country without leaving, with the VISA you have to leave every 90 days.

You can apply for and one year extension of stay based upon marriage at the immigration office in Sisaket if that is the province where you will be living. You will need 400k baht in a Thai bank in your name only for 2 months or proof of 40k baht income.

You can get a multiple entry non-o visa that allows unlimited 90 day entries for a year from the date of issue with no financial proof in Savannakhet. You will need to leave the country every 90 days for a new entry.

If you want the multiple entry non-o visa you could apply for it at the embassy in London instead of getting a single entry visa.

Just to be clear, ubonjoe is providing two different options.

Going with the 'extension of stay' process will allow you continued stay in Thailand (up to the date granted by the extension). You'll only be required to file 90-day reports in-country (which you can usually do online).

While with the VISA options, as ubonjoe states, 'You will need to leave the country every 90 days for a new entry".
