Westerner who claimed memory loss in Thai hospital arrested after it’s revealed he’s a wanted fraudster and thief

A European man who was hospitalised after claiming he had been robbed, drugged and was suffering from severe memory loss has been found to be a wanted fraudster and thief.

Dariusz Pieprzyca was arrested at his hospital bed by Thai police on Sunday and is currently behind bars.

Last Friday Pieprzyca was the subject of an online appeal launched by a good natured Facebook user who thought he was helping a man in need.

The post, which was shared more than 6,000 times, was seeking help in identifying a Western man who claimed to be suffering from memory loss.

“This gentleman is presently at the Cambodia and Thailand border. He was approached by border police. They questioned him and quickly realised he was ill. They then took him to the hospital”, the post read.

“He unfortunately has lost his memory. He has no recollection of his name or country of residence. He has been robbed, so there is no identification on him at all. Please, We ask people to share this post.

“We have to try all countries as he seems to have a European accent. We think he is European but I’m not sure. so this needs this to go far and wide. It is very important we try to locate his family urgently. He is very distressed but safe in the hospital. Also, he has a very distinctive tattoo on his right arm. If anyone has any information they could help us with, please contact me. Thank you for your help”.

However, eagle eyed Facebook users discovered that the man who was in a hospital in Aranyaprathet, Sa Kaeo was actually Dariusz Pieprzyca from Poland who is wanted in Thailand and his homeland for charges of theft and fraud.

Pieprzyca, who had also spent time in Cambodia had been on the run since 2016 and is alleged to have stolen more than $5,000 from people in Thailand and Poland.

A warning regarding Pieprzyca was posted to the Thaivisa forum last year.

He may have recently been working as a teacher in Udon Thani, it has been claimed.

An update to the Facebook appeal posted on Sunday evening read:

“Hi, just a quick update. The man I had previously made a post about claiming to have been drugged, robbed and suffering memory loss turnt out to be a known con man and criminal with previous records.

“He has now been arrested by local police and is being held in custody. Thanks for all those that were willing to help and that were concerned. Much appreciated your help.....”

A photo of Pieprzyca in custody was also posted.

This isn’t the first time that Pieprzyca, who has a distinctive tattoo on his forearm, had been the subject of an online appeal after claiming to be suffering from memory loss.

Last month, a post was shared on Facebook about a man who claimed he had lost his memory in Hanoi. Pictures shared in the post now reveal that it was also Pieprzyca.

According to folklore if he's whacked hard on the head he'll get his memory back. Worth a shot.

If the good natured ones hadn’t shared the post, the “eagle eyed” ones wouldn’t have been able to help get him caught.

Buy looking at his happy face on the picture, it really looks like the mans memory slowly starting to emerge from the back of his rotten head.

Well anybody who is surprised that there are many western scammers, con-artists or whatever in Thailand and the region must be sleeping 24 hours.

You can find them in every nook and cranny, property developers and agents, lawyers, selling stolen cars, folks who check into hotels then abscond without paying and steal the hotel fittings, and a further list as long as your arm.

Friend had a western couple rent a luxury property from him on Jomtien, they cleaned out the furniture and some 4 or 5 air-conditioners, washing machine, fridge, same day they had unhooked all the pool equipment and were in the process of putting it in a pick up when the agent who had rented the property took a prospective renter to a house nearby. Agent checked what was happening and was offered a bribe, but the agent called the cops and asked the western manager of the village complex to come. Thieves were apprehended, nearly everything recovered but damaged, Thieves were deported next day.

Later it was discovered that the western manager of the village was involved plus his western wife had stolen a large amount of funds paid by the house owners for annual village maintenance fees.

The list goes on.

Given the above it surprises me, regularly, that we see so many complaints that it's difficult to get / renew visas etc.

Well on the positive side, at least this scammer put some effort into his scam. I prefer to see this than someone just setting up a "GoFundMe" page to scam people.

"So It's pretty much bullshit.  Hee hee hee. "   "Right now he is sleeping like a puppy and has no ideal the Cops are going to arrest him."

Priceless soundtrack, and I agree, pretty good conversational standard English.  I'll bet that guy (cop or whatever he is) never learned HIS English from a Polish fraudster in Isaan.   We could perhaps do with a few more of him.   Good work by his previous facebook "friends."

As for this guy, lock him up and throw away the key for a year or five.  As with all deadbeats like this they should record his biometrics before eventual deportation so they can be held ready, as among the first profiles to go into the system when Thailand necessarily upgrades its immigration system with a modern biometrics feature.   They can then nail these deadbeats when they try to come back in a few years with a new or even their old passport again.  Unlike at the moment when they seem to just   "Walk ring in, and set right down."

he has an Airborne tattoo, so he is, I think, American

WHen I saw the first VDO of him talking and smirking I didn't believe his BS story. Amnesia is the stuff of Hollywood, just like quicksand. Sure it may happen but really... come on.

Low life man

Live of peoples good heart

Send him home and ban him

Like a number of other self proclaimed secret squirrel Ex-Pats  "If I had to tell you what my tattoo means or what we did, I would then have to kill you......... (unless, of course, you are a good listener and paying for the beer.)"

He has been caught before also doing some scam and he is not going to go away. The moment he is released, he will be back on a visa exempt or tourist or some such visa and carry on with some other con.

They stand in line to be first to rip off their own countrymen.   It seems a common feature of expat criminals everywhere to rip off their own countrymen first.  Thais are lending money to Thais at 10 to 20% a month;  yes, a month;  all over the world.

I hope they don't deport him .too good for him thai monkey house better .

Just needs a little crowdfunding for the fare home now...

We got dozens of them here in the UK if they are looking for a few more.. Must be about 20 families in my street.

I hope you enjoy your new home and the food!

Well done all who got him where he belongs , behind bars.  Would of been a perfect pic if he was pointing to the bars , he nearly is ....just can't get that finger to work.
